Just picked this up last week. My very first rifle. It's a Daniel Defense M4 Carbine.

Very excited to get out and do some shooting later this week. This rifle feels great! Good weight and balanced. Nice features right out of the box and all it really needs is an optic and sling. Hopefully the reviews I have read about this piece are correct and if so I should be good to go!

Enjoy!

What optic are you going with?
Not sure. Aimpoint and Eotech have been suggested by friends, but I've always been impressed with my TruGlo parts and accessories. I will have to shop around a bit and read some reviews.

Your thoughts? Not really looking for a scope. Really just want a nice durable red/green dot setup.

Really depends on your budget. I prefer Aimpoints because I have yet to see a tougher line of Red Dot optics....plus they have an insane battery life. I have an Aimpoint Micro and love it, however the Aimpoint Pro is an exellent offering as well for those looking to spend less. If you do decide to go Eotech, try to stick with the newer XPS series.

Thanks for the input wahoo. Budget is not a big concern (i realize these things cost money) but more I want to know I am going to feel good about my investment after all is said and done.

I will desire a quality optic that will last a long time and thus be a good investment. Unfortunately, I am new to optics (only ever owned handguns) and I need to do some research and handle a few pieces before I will decide on anything.

Thanks again for the suggestions of what to look into!

If budget is no concern take a HARD look at the Aimpoint Micros! Either the H-1 or T-1 will do fine. The H-1 isn't Night Vision Compatible, however it also tends to cost around $100 or so less. They are super tough and small rather than bulky/heavy.

a lot of folks will say the t-1...which is a GREAT sight...but i went with a vortex SPARC after all the fantastic reviews its gotten. It's only $200...and has the fit/finish of the Aimpoint, and a lifetime warranty to boot. Also comes with 3 mounts...for lower 1/3, absolute and for just mounting straight to picitanny

question....with the fixed rear sight, am i going to need to get a spacer or adapter in order to mount an optic with a clear field of vision or are you all using the optic in combination with the fixed sights?

thanks in advance!

What optic are you gonna go with???

Using fixed sights most would go with an optic/mount combination which gives Lower 1/3rd co-witness. That would put the iron sights in the lower 3rd of your field of view. This set up allows for a clearer field of view than having an absolute co witness.

Also, if you're looking to get some additional mags for your new DD I sugest you take a hard look at the sale DSGArms has going on right now. (10) Black Teflon Coated GI Mags with Magpul followers for $85! I just ordered some earlier this morning.

You should also look into signing up for a good Carbine class soon too. Being new to the AR, good instruction will go a long ways to getting you up to speed and comfortable with your new carbine. Here is NC we have access to some excellent training! Take a look at Trace Armory, Defensive Concepts NC, and Aesir Training...all of which offer great classes combined with being pretty affordable.

Still reviewing some options, but leaning toward the Aimpoint Micro H-1. Seems to be a good quality optic in a small package. I appreciate your suggestion in a previous post.

Thanks for the tip on the mags. I may have to place an order; as that seems like a great deal!

Regarding training, yes I will be working with an instructor and getting some sound advice on proper technique, field stripping, cleaning, using a sling, etc. Unfortunately, I will not have an opportunity to work with Ben for another few weeks. I will however be doing a little firing with my father later this afternoon and will work on zeroing in the irons. Very much looking forward to shooting the M4!

once again with the Vortex.....it comes with all of the different mounts you would use..
you can mount straight to the base
you can use the spacer for lower 1/3rd co-witness
you can use the spacer for absolute co-witness (what i prefer)

The Vortex is a great optics for the budget minded, however budget doesn't seem to be a concern here as the OP wants to "Buy once cry once." I take no issue with budget optics, but recognizing that they are not just as good as professional grade optics I choose not to use them on my serious self defense or competition firearms.

Thanks GSR and i have been reading reviews on the vortex. had not yet gotten to the "what comes in the bag with the scope", but i did hear you and am taking into consideration your recommendation. thank you!

i do however want to purchase once and be done with it if i can. one reason i appreciate you all giving me some options to consider!

the vortex ISN'T a budget optic, it's a professional grade optic at a reasonable price. Aimpoint is only so expensive because of it's legacy. Go read some reviews on the SPARC and you'll see.

Congrats! Is this gonna be your truck gun for that monster Nissan Frontier?

Wait are you the same Houdini??

Have read plenty of reviews on the SPARC and like I said I recognize it as a good optic, Never said it was a budget optic...I said it was great for teh budget minded buyer. All that sais, an Aimpoint it is not ;)

I'm knoking your choice to go with the SPARC as I know a lot of people have been very happy with it and the rest of the Vortex product line.
