My father received this knife as a gift in the mid 70's from a friend in the military, who said that it came from Germany and was made fro Blue Steel. Only identifying marks of any kind are the numbers 5000, no other marks on the knife or the sheath.

That looks a little bit like a Randall Made Knife. Here is a good place to start your research.

All of the older ones I have seen were marked with the randall name on the on the blade near the hilt. You may want to look for faint markings with good magnification. There is a lady that displays at the Raleigh gun show that sells Randall and other old knives and is familiar with their values. I would ask her to give you an opinion. She helped me with a Randall from my father's collection.

follow the link on the bottom to gallery of SOG knives. If it is the real deal,, you have a very rare and coveted knife. Pictures are small, but I am guessing maybe an Iron Guard SOG

You lucky dog!

According to this, it would be the number 2 knife and the blade did look like the Blue on a gun barrel. The gentleman was also in Special Forces and retired with 30 years in the military about this same time. Some of the blue has been worn off the blade from sharpening, but all around the knife is in good condition. If you need some larger pictures to be sure of your assessment, would be glad to email some to you.
