Trailer: Synopsis: THE SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE tells the true story of the 1961 siege of a 150-member Irish U.N. battalion under Commander Patrick Quinlan by 3,000 Congolese troops, led by French and Belgian mercenaries working for mining companies. Jamie Dornan plays the Irish commander Patrick Quinlan while Guillaume Canet plays a French commander Falques. On Netflix October 7. I had never heard of this battle. I read the wikipedia page and it is an interesting story. The thing that struck me is apparently the Irish government considered the soldiers an embarrassment because they surrendered after 4 days of fighting overwhelming odds. They literally ran out of ammunition. The soldiers finally received some of the recognition they deserved in 2005.
Just got done watching it, and I highly recommend it. I would say it is an unreal story - but sadly, I feel the truth of the matter - brave men, duty bound being the pawns of sniveling politicians - is far more common that we'd like to admit....what with the rhetorical glories of war and all. Well worth a watch, based on true events. Seriously, watch it.
Never knew about these events until I watched this on Netflix. Was a good movie to watch and it led me to reading Wikipedia and other related sites.
Jamie Dornan is outstanding the Netflix series The Fall. It also features Dana Scully as a British detective.
Great movie...and if you like the British type movies, there is an Amazon series named The Last Post, also good.
