I put a nikon on that 308 American I got on a deal. I am very satisfied. Shooting sub moa at 100 yards as long as the barrel is cool and the glass is outstanding in low light hunting conditions.

Vortex Vipers are great, but the Crossfire series isn't as good of glass as that p series nikon. Id at least get a diamondback series if going with vortex. Id honestly buy that p223 nikon with the 223 bdc and be done with it.

That being said, consider what kind of shooting you'll be doing. Scopes with lower power bottom end (esp 1-6) are "all the rage." I doubt you are planning on any tactical response with a bolt action, so the 3-9 should be fine. You may find those rings to be a bit high, though. I think they are designed more for an AR which has a higher line of sight over bore.

Keep the rings for an ar or sale them. Basically getting them free. There are no sights on the American, so no need for a detach. A solid once piece makes sense. I went with this in medium for my 3-9x40, 59.99 at basspro. http://www.dnzproducts.com/product/game-reaper-ruger/

I've got a set of low rings I plan on using.

Open sights would have been perfect on this rifle though, I agree.

I possibly could have went with low on a 3-9x40. These were the medium dnz. Low would have been very close. I have an extra set of low leupold prw rings in the safe.

BTY not sure if your Americis ranch is going to be a plinking rifle or a varmint hunting rifle, but as a hunting rifle the only thing I don't like about these Americans is the very positive and loud clicking tang safety. Takes a lot of effort to keep it silent. I modified mine, removing some of the spring. Still positive enough it will not get bumped off, and much smoother and quieter now.
