No way! I had no idea. It never even occurred to me that they would have their own OS but makes perfect sense. Makes perfect sense from a totalitarian dictator point of view I mean.
I assumed that they used their own proprietary closed source OS. Previously they ran Windows XP. I was a little shocked they would allow an open source OS. Interesting that they went through great lengths to make a Red Star OS look similar to Apple.
North Korea has a version of Linux. German super-linux-geeks are tearing the code apart bit by bit in order to understand it. Theories so far:
Features rich...if by feature rich you mean an oppression tool
Watermarks files in an effort to track them from pc to thumb drive...presumably an effort to track western media black market items.
Looks to be full of spyware for government use.
If the user makes too many unapproved system changes, it reboots to the previous config.
Speculations from me:
This could be HUGE. Now the entire open source world can figure out ways around North Korea's restrictive western media blockade. The downside of that is that not many people have pc's. It also tells me that they're braintrust is seriously weak. If north korea tech was so great, they would have a proprietary OS by now.
You also have to consider that not much of the country even has power.
