Plants you can eat in NC?

So I was watching a guy on YouTube walk around his property in GA and eat plants that grew there.

Watching this guy just gobble up plants around his home made me realize that a guy with that kind of knowledge will never go hungry.

It also made me remember that old saying about "knowledge" being the lightest tool you can take with you anywhere.

Being that we live in NC, I figured it would be a good idea to know what wild plants one can consume.

Does anyone here in the Carolinas known what wild plants can be eaten?

Thanks.

Wild Violet is good in salads both the flower and the leaf And it is a cure for my sinus problems.
Chickweed can be eaten as well Polk Weed when young. Bamboo and Cattail shoots are good raw or stir fried.
Inner bark of a pine tree and you can make a tea from the needles.
Just to name a few. If you go out gathering wild eatables remember never take all of what you find always leave some to reproduce.

One thing to keep in mind somethings can be eaten with out any precautions while some like the Polk Weed has to be prepared a certain way and not all the plant can be eaten. Honeysuckle is another example, the nectar is safe but the berries are not. It is best to stay away from ALL mushrooms unless you are very knowledgeable because they can be the most dangerous and their are "look a likes" that can also fool you.

With wild edibles you have to know what you are doing. Do lots of Google searches and print and read what you find. Also try and find some good books and their are some tri-fold style pamphlets available also.

Once in a while there are opportunities to go on a woods walk with folks that are knowledgeable about wild eatables, check with your local agriculture extension.

Aside from that you might find these helpful.

I got on the email list from these guys somehow.

There's a Bushcraft Gathering coming up on the 29th that might be informative.

As far as mushrooms go. We have a plethora of chicken mushrooms (Laetiporus) here. Easily identifiable and taste just like chicken breast when sautéed in butter. If you find any sparassis (looks like brain tissue) then your in to something. That's a delicacy. That gets put in the Dutch oven for stew or soup.

OP, you are not that far from Pittsboro.

The Central Carolina Community College has a small campus in Pittsboro that offers medicinal and edible plant classes two or three times a year. My wife has taken two of the classes and my family has benefited from them greatly. She said it usually averaged 30 minutes classroom time for every 6-8 hours in the field.

We eat something from the woods or yard pretty much every day. She was even able to hot box some of the stuff like chickweed over the winter so we could enjoy good greens year round. Might be worth checking into.

I will check it out, thanks. I watch survival shows and admire the people who know what you can and can't eat. I know it's not a lot of calories, but as you said there are also medicinal benefits.

I might also check out some of the upcoming events mentioned here.

If you're a preppper or are into wilderness survival, this if should be common knowledge IMO.

There should be a "sticky" if someone could create one, with pictures and decriptions of local edible and medicinal plants that are here where we live.

Maybe a mod and people who know what they are doing could team up and create one?
