Only two problems with that.......1) It's still a Nissan, and 2) Its a Frontier..........Do yourselves a favor and spend a couple minutes talking to the techs or especially the parts guys at your chosen dealership before committing to anything.

Extra Credit: I'd absolutely love to shoe-horn a 3bt cummins into a newer Jeep Wrangler unlimited.....its on the bucket list.

Please elaborate . . .

I'm toying with the idea of getting a high mileage Frontier as a weekend truck for range trips, hauling my bike (the leg powered kind), etc., but if odds are good I'm going to be buying a headache, I'll pass.

I see ram'um is offering a fiat v-6 diesel with the 8 speed behind it in a 1/2ton but I bet there no basic truck versions in 2 and 4x4 and bet it won't be cheap to get 30mpg on the highway ether.
They offer it in several and it is also only 2500$ from what I remember looking over the gas v8 they us.

Late 2015/2016 the new Chevy Colorado will have a diesel. They look pretty awesome.
Last I seen the roll out was 2015 later this year in gas and summer next year will be badged a 2016 but roll out late summer 2015....
Kind of cool that dodge in the 1500 set the pace and everyone else if to follow..... Other then Toyota...The rolled out there new tires, paint and offroad mall crawlers....

I'd certainly pass on it. The 3.3's are a headache to work on even for an experienced tech such as myself. The distributors seem to fail often and randomly , the valve covers are held down with Phillips head screws and the engine bay retains so much heat that even new gaskets become dry and brittle within months of replacement. There's coolant lines behind the intake that like to burst at around 100k that are a pita to get to. Knock sensor codes left and right from "good" engines. Manual tensioners on the belts, it's certainly not a diy friendly vehicle.

That being said they're not all bad, plenty tough for off-road duty, but for your wallets sake, I'd be looking for something with a Toyota badge on it (as far as high mileage compact 4wd trucks go)

Thanks for the color on the Frontier. Any experience with older model, say 2001-2005, Nissan Xterras? Similar issues?

Same engine family.
That's what I figured, thanks. Shame. Damn good looking vehicles, IMHO.

Tacomas and 4runners are friggin expensive by comparison. Too bad Honda wasn't making Ridgelines back in the 90s. Would love a late 90s version of that.

We own a 2000 Xterra with the 3.3 V6. It's been a great vehicle and at 14 years old it only has 68,000 miles on it. I changed the spark plugs last year and that number 6 plug almost made me drink whiskey. My FIL has a 93' Nissan pickup with the D21 (?) 4 cyl that has 346,000 miles on it. It's sitting in my driveway right now because he wants me to check it out due to a miss.

ClubXterra forums are a great place to learn about the 3.3V6

3.3 Nissan motors are very reliable and easy to work on, sure they have there weak points like everything else but with proper care they will easily make 250k. I would have no problem buying another I already have one in the wifes Quest and it has been excellent. Working on it is no problem and would be even eiasier in a truck where it wasn't turned sideways.

Thanks for the view from the other side. Some browsing at KBB shows the Frontier and Xterra get very good reviews. The Tacoma and 4runner get slightly better reviews, but of course, they also command higher prices in the used car market. It's crazy how much people want, and presumably others will pay, for a 20yr old Taco!

Nice plus anything would ride better than the Tacoma, may not be as tough though.

Why does anybody want a short bed on a pickup??
I have no clue, mine is a 6' on the taco, the longest they make, and I wanted a tundra 4 door but it has a 5' bed and that was a no go.
Tundra markets there truck as a full size and a do all but puts a car trunk on it....

Looks like I may be going back to a Dodge or Chevy to get a 4 door and 8' bed.
