Sent my Premier II to Les Baer for a checkered magwell. They reblued the entire gun so that it all matches. Just gave it a cleaning. Heavy fondling occurred. I will now spend the rest of my days shooting the heck out of it.

My DW ECO...just a tiny bit too small for my hand, whereas I believe a ECP would be more comfortable, but absolutely the most comfortable gun I've ever carried. Holster was custom made by Paul at Warbird Leather.

So is the Nighthawk worth the money? Was looking at the President model in 10MM, but damn it's a lot of coin.

That's the $64K question, and it's entirely subjective. If you love and truly appreciate the 1911 platform, then yes- it's a dream machine and an absolute joy to shoot- no regrets. It's so well made, and the slide is so buttery smooth that I just love holding it. I did an accuracy test with some of my polymer guns, a production 1911, and my more expensive custom pistols, and they were far and away more accurate, flatter shooting, and my split times were better. The fit, finish, and attention to detail/craftsmanship is excellent.

But again, many folks view them simply as tools and find it ridiculous to spend that kind of cheddar. Which is how I feel about cars- it's simply transportation and I will never spend that much on one.

So my first and only 1911 has been my Dan Wesson ECO, and I absolutely regret having this be the first point in my life going the 1911 route. I love everything about the gun. I had shot/handled a few before this one: a S&W Performance Center 1911, a Springfield TRP 10mm w/ 6" barrel, and a Rock Island bargain 1911. I liked all of them, but there was something special in the Dan Wesson. Just the craftsmanship alone was enough to make me appreciate every penny I dropped on it. I also own a S&W M&P, and it feels like garbage next to my DW, albeit I shoot both just about as accurately. I love carrying my 1911 way more than my M&P, for obvious reasons.

So since you own a DW, is the Nighthawk that much more superior to the DW? I really am wondering when and where the law of diminishing returns comes into play. Sure, the resale value will be there, but in the end, would you say that there's considerable difference between Nighthawk and DW? If so, can you elaborate? I do plan to get down to my local gunshop...who do have a couple of used Nighthawks in stock, and feel the difference for myself.

I was originally looking at the DW Titan for my 10mm solution, but a lot of folks over at 1911addicts said that, for the money and that pricepoint, I might as well get a Nighthawk. Something about the 2011 frames being superior to the Caspian frames...but I'm still rather a novice when it comes to 1911 intricacies.

Edit: For a 10mm, the new Kodiak looks tempting, and saves me about $2k...looks like DW was tired of losing the market to Springfield: https://danwessonfirearms.com/product/kodiak/

In my opinion, Dan Wesson makes the best 1911 production gun out there. Echelons of better quality than Springfield or Colt for instance. I was rather unimpressed with two of my Colts, and in fact, I had an Armscor/Citadel 1911 that was superior (trigger, fit, action) but that's another story. The Springer was a fine weapon, no complaints really, I just don't like billboards on slides and I'm not a fan of some of their prior (shady) business decisions.

Is my Nighthawk noticeably of superior quality than my Dan Wesson? Yes. Not by leaps and bounds, but when holding them both, doing a functions check, and simply dry firing them- you can tell the Hawk was truly built by one gunsmith. It's a luxury item, and I just simply wanted one. Company's that build custom 1911s take 100% ownership and accept nothing less than your complete satisfaction-- the president of Guncrafter (for instance) personally inspects each gun before leaving the factory. He's answered my emails himself, and changed out a trigger and front sight free of charge, and paid for shipping. Nothing wrong with them, I just wanted different ones.

Long winded answer. I recommend that you buy the DW. They are excellent firearms, have near custom build quality, and you'll have zero regrets. Resale value doesn't diminish that much if you decide to do so....Get a custom gun when you can't stop thinking about it, visit the website multiple times a day, read everything you can about it, and are generally obsessed!

I really appreciate the thoughtful reply here. I was just reading about the Titan last night and the Elite series is subcontracted out to a single gunsmith (in Kansas I think?). I do love my ECO and would think sticking with DW to expand the collection would be a fun idea. Thanks for the valuable perspective.
