I've been searching the internet trying to find information on this rifle and haven't come up with much. I do know that it was my grand fathers squirrel gun when he was a kid and apparently in his words "it put dinner on the table many of nights." It needs a good cleaning and i was thinking about bringing some of the glory back to it. I know it's not worth much in cash but does carry a sentimental value. Any suggestions?

I didn't find a serial number on it. I really wanted to make it shine with either a replacement stock or refinishing this one. It also needs to be re-blued. This was actually the first gun I ever shot and will be the first (other than an m-16) that I will work on.

I would just soak the metal in oil and then rub softly with 0000 steel wool.
Clean the stock with a mild wood cleaner and a soft cloth.
Then maybe rub some tung or linseed oil onto the stock with your fingers.

Be gentle, it's your Grand Papa's.

BTW, I didn't mean just any furniture polish... Old English, I believe it is called, will bring out the color in a similar manner as linseed oil, but it is thinner. If you use linseed oil, reduce it just a little with mineral spirits. It doesn't take much to turn an old stock into a good looking old stock!

Nice rifle OP. I have my grand-daddy's Model 41. There is a Model 41P that had a peep sight; I'd really like that model. These ARE pretty accurate...I'm 49 and open sights are getting tough for me to see well, but the long sight radius on that barrel works pretty well.

I hear you about the refinishing. That stock up there actually looks pretty good. Now the one I have (serial 61xxx, 1937) has a pretty chewed-up stock. Scratched up pretty good, and some initials that are CARVED into the stock. Ugly as sin. And they must have been there when he got it, because no one in any part of my family has those initials. So, I've toyed with the idea of redoing this, but would have to sand down and totally refinish. The metal is fine, though any blueing is long gone. Right now it's at my daddy's house for pest control.
