I have 8+ plus cameras on the outside of my house, 4 of which have been there since 2004. Some are pan and tilt, with all computer based DVR recording. They are all viewable, including pan & tilt control via any remote Internet connected computer or my Android smartphone via IP Cam app or mobile browser. A couple of the cameras are WansView WiFi/wired IP cams that only cost $58.00 each from Amazon. They work great when mounted under an overhang, because they are not typically outdoor cams and need some shielding from direct rain.
The hardest part of setting up this type of system is that if you are not computer literate on network configuration, you will need help configuring the cameras, router and remote access via the Internet. Once installed, it just works. Knock on wood, I have had no failures and didn't spend a ton of money, either.
Other than considering placement, you need to work on lighting for night. IR cameras are great for short distances, but I use a combination of AC powered and solar lighting to flood the necessary part of the yard when movement is detected. None of it is obtrusive or unsightly. Some of my lighting dims to accent lighting at night and then full brightness when motion is detected.
Also, put up a few obviously placed dummy cams to distract anyone from seeing the real cams that are recording intrusion.
