I have an old single shot 410 that used to be out at my family's farm. Its not in the absolute worse shape but its got some significant surface rust and some pitting. I was wondering how hard it is to do rust bluing at home. I watched the midway video and it seems pretty straight forward but the only thing I am worried about is prepping the metal.

Its more of a long process then it is hard. I have had guys come in for us to hot blue there guns and have hand sanded it with sandpaper before. If done right it could really add a different look to your gun. Its basically the same idea we use with Polish. We start out with 220 grit and move up in grit till you get the desired outcome. Someone that has had sanded their gun before could definitely lead you in the right direction.

All good bluing jobs start with metal prep. Use Mark Lee's stuff, it is mercury free. All you need is a tank to boil water in and grinder with a carding wheel which can be replaced with steel wool but my best results came with the uniformity of using the carding wheel. Time consuming yes, difficult-not really. follow the directions, watch the video and take care of the details. Also plug the barrel with wooden dowel rods nice and tight.
