Will most of the work have to be done by a gunsmith? By "work" I mean attaching the barrel to the action and bedding the stock. I just got done with my first AR build, so I am obviously full of myself, but are these bolt builds in a whole other league?

 

Yes the smith cuts the threads, sets the headspace , crown and another other knowledge things.

Oh, right, headspace. That's kind of important from what I've heard. I read some cool stuff about about 27 Nosler if you want a hipster/wildcat caliber.

The 6mm is a beast, little to no recoil and fast as a bitch, I have a 243 AI that is a monster, getting 3200 while fire forming, I suspect to be 3500 after the brass is all formed up

 

All it needs now is to have a barrel nut setup like the remage system so you can do your own barrel changes at home. Actually it looks ready to use the barrel nut since the recoil lug is machined to the receiver. If I spent money on an action like that I'd have several different barrels in different calibers to put on it.

Why not just have a dedicated rig, mans building a comp guy seems like a lot of swapping and tom foolery, but to each their own. j Boyette when is your match good sir, for LR rifle

FYI, BHW does bolt gun barrels too. And, you can order it fluted, coated, etc.

 

If you pick the right cartridge to start with there is no need for a barrel nut. If you are determined to tinker, a good smith can set up switch barrels without a nut, just requires a bit more beefy tools.
The tool that does a lot of things well, rarely does anything exceptional.....you can quote me on that.

6 x 47 Lapua would be my go-to unless you go for a magnum load of some sort. I Went 6cm, but I'm not truly in love w/ the hornady brass. if you go 6x47 all you need to do is just run the 6.5x47 Lapua brass down into a 6x47 and go shoot.

I'd say the 6 will edge out the 6.5 in most PRS style performance. If you take a load that is book safe and not working the brass hard the 6mm will win most every time. Where, I feel, the little 6mm loses out is at long ranges over 1000 yards where you're shooting into grass and you don't get any call on your shot. FWIW the 6.5 isn't much better and sometimes even a 300 or 338 wouldn't help in certain situations so YMMV.

Still debating on caliber. 6.5 creedmoor vs .260 I've nailed it down those two. Barrel is coming in Friday, and nice package is coming in Thursday.

 

go with the 6.5, you can match the speed and not worry about feed issues w/ loading longer.... or to 6.5x47 to match the 6.5 AND get great brass

 

It was my understanding the lapua can't get the velocity of a 6.5 creed unless you push it kind hard.

 

the 6.5x47 is a little slower, but not by much. Have you run any ballistics tables to actually look at the difference for windage at distance?
