Is this for targets? Do you plan on dialing for elevation? Have you considered an SWFA fixed power scope?

    Also Sightron.

I have seven of the Viper 6.5-20x44's and they are EXCELLENT. The BDC reticle is very useable compared to others on the market. Currently CameralandNY has the 50mm objective version on sale from $469 for $299. They are one of Vortex's largest distributors, not some fly by night it fell off the back of the truck NY shops; buy with confidence from them.

In the Vortex line your next step up would be a SFP PST or Viper HS-T. Both are over your $500 budget though.

Thanks for the replies. That is a great deal on the 50mm. I do not think I want a fixed power scope but I am going to think about that some more.

Application - right now I am torn between buying a heavy barrel howa 1500 in .308 or building an AR in .223 wylde with an 18 or 20" barrel. I reload and have looked at the ballistics, both should be fine out to 800 yards. The AR will have a hard time going to 1000 but my home range does not go out that far. Its going to be 99% target shooting. I hardly ever deer hunt so I am selling my lightweight 30-06 and getting something better suited for banging steel.

    someone told me one time...

be honest with yourself, how often do you actually turn your scope to a lower power setting..

i went to the range a couple times and found that i didn't turn mine down at all... that is when i decided that a lower power fixed scope was good for what i wanted to do...

lower power fixed is usually clearer glass and less expensive... i would put my 16x SWFA up against a 20x other brand scope of 3 times the price any day..

I would say that I rarely do turn it down, which is why I am fine with a second focal plane scope.

But just last week I had trouble finding something I wanted to shoot at close range and I did have to turn it down.

BTW I just bought the viper for $299. Could not pass that deal up.

That link above doesn't work. Post a link to the viper scope you bought for $299. All I saw for that price were crossfires lol

I've got the Viper HS-T 6x24 on my Grendel. Damn fine scope. The reticle is extended at the bottom for greater elevation at distance.

I Have several of these scopes and several different Vortex scopes. The Sightron has better eye relief is clearer glass and tracks great and can be bought for 395-425. The vortex scopes I have also are very good optics but for the $ the Sightron is a better scope. Just my 2 cent

    To revive an old thread.......
I just bought the Nikon Black FX1000, and I must say, bang for buck this is the best scope I have. It’s 4x16x50, the glass is very very good and the reticle is clean although just a tad thicker than ideal for long range precision. The turrets have very crisp adjustments and the return to zero is perfect. I’ve only had it a few months so I can’t speak on the long term durability but so far it’s handled a 338-378 without issues and it does have a lifetime warranty.

Absolutely love my Viper 6x24x50. Got it for an awesome deal through opticsplanet. Glass is clear. Turrets are solid, and the I've knocked it around a bit and it still holds zero.
