I'm trying to decide on what would be the perfect camping / backpacking gun.

General requirements -

Short
Light
Easily carried
Has min. 100 yd range. (East coast, there's SELDOM more than a 100 yard shot for a deer / game)
Major caliber
Game taker / bear stopper
Willing to consider SBR / SBS

Could be rifle, pistol or shotgun.

Whadda ya think?

Short, light, easily carried, 100 yd range and decent stopping power.......I am thinking a plain old lever action Marlin or Winchester either in 30-30 or .357 Magnum. With a good sling, its easy to carry and shorter length is fast handling. I think the lever action is also less scary to non gun people then a typical mag fed black rifle.

I just gave myself a GREAT excuse to buy a lever gun in .357! SWEET!

Are you going to hunt with it also? Kind of looks like you are, then I would agree with the lever carbine in 30-30 or something of that sort.

If it is strictly camping/backpacking I would just carry a pistol in a fairly easily accessible pouch.

My requirements are : able to take a deer up to 100 yards.

ANything that can do that (and meet teh other requirements) I am open to.

Right now, I am leaning toward something like the Savage 24C - rifle barrel over shotgun barrel o/u configutation.

well if you like the Savage 24 platform look for a 22lr over 20 gauge
that should cover most any game hunting needs and some self-defence needs
I would also carry a 357 with a 4" or 6" barrel for multi 2 legged defence needs

"bear stopper" might be questionable, but on the cheap you might consider an SKS paratrooper model. Should zap pretty much anything within a 100yds. Lightweight, handy, no magazines to loose and easily reloaded with stripper clips

16" .357 lever rifle, I have a Puma like that, very light and handy.

Savage Scout in .308. Lightweight, fast handling, and .30 cal. Use it with the ghost ring sights, put a scout scope on it, or take off the rear sight and scout scope base and put a set of regular bases and rings for a normal scope setup. I have an early model one that will keep 150 grn. Win. Ballistic Silvertips in a 1" group at 100 yds. A couple of members here have seen it in action.
