I have a chance to trade my almost new Remington SPS Tactical 308 with SWFA SS scope Wyatt's magazine conversion Harris bipod sniper bag and 80 rounds of ammo for a Remington 700 police 338 lapua. It has been painted by the guy with a rattle can it looks like which concerns me a little but I will have it painted fde. Comes with reloading dies, primers, brass powder and 20 bullets ready to go. I really feel like I would be doing a great deal on my end what is your opinion? I know the cost of ammo, recoil and the downside of the 338 but I have always wanted one so I need to know if I am Cingular out good on the deal not why I shouldn't buy a 338 Lapua

If I remember they had some problems with the early ones, I would make sure of the build and date.
Also if you can inspect fired cases and unfired, any info on round count?

If you are not looking the range then I see no reason for it.
Kind of like it is OK to add one to the group of guns, but I don't think I would trade a shooter 308 for one and be out a 308....

Did not most come with a comp?

I have been wanting one, can't say why and any proof but everyone, even someone at remington said get one of the later guns, not the old ones, as for the recall and problems...
But not up on the facts....

I think that I will end up with a Barett when I make the move.
There were a few at the DDC this past weekend, they are nice. Around 4500-5500 price so that is the kicker.
But it should be a life time gun....

Only 100 and painted cheap has me thinking......

Don't know what to think about that, just hope it is not covering up something.

Has 100 rounds down the tube so hopefully it is a later one
That's what sucks though....depends on the shooter. Some folks leave guns sitting in safes years before/if ever shooting. Like Mr.Gadget said I wouldnt trade a good shooting .308 for a .338 just to have it unless I had another sweet shooting .308 in the safe. Just MHO, of course Ive been known to do whatever I want no matter what others say haha.

I would go check it out Atleast. As stated if its an early production stay away from it.

IIRC and dont hold me to this since its been a while since reading about these, but the trigger is the giveaway if its a newer or older model. If it is a smooth trigger its an older model, the newer models have ribs on the trigger and I *think* it's adjustable. Please don't flame me if I'm wrong, I did a whole bunch of digging about the Remington 338 but couldn't float the bill so I didn't get one.

Honestly, I wouldn't trade it. Why? Well the barrel life on a 338 Lapua is horrible at roughly 1500 rounds. If its only going to be a hunting rifle this will pose no problem. If you do alot of shooting then it will become one. Don't get me wrong a 1600yd rifle is just awesome but if you don't have a place to shoot that far then it's kinda pointless

Stick with the 308, I think you'll be happier in the end with it.

For that gun, you need to see if he broke it in with that 100 rounds because it takes about 100 rounds to do it properly. If he says he did, ask him how he did it and that should give you some guidance on the bore. 300WM and up need to have a good break in or the bore will wear improperly causing you accuracy issues down the road. Painting is fine, you can clean that.
