What kind of optic are you planning on mounting?
Mini dot, 30mm dot, scope, holographic, etc.

The optic you plan on using will really dictate what mounting option you should use. The Ultimak, as well as the Midwest Industries forend rails (with dedicated mounts) will allow you to cowitness several specific red dots. If cowitness isn't important to you, then there are a ton of other options for mounting a red dot up front, or where the rear sight sits.

Mounting the Parabellum or Texas Weapons top cover rails will give you a lot of flexibility in scope mounting and mounting larger dots like EOTechs and some Trijicons.

Well for the mini dots like the T1/H1, RMR, Fastfire, PA Micro, etc., the Midwest Industries forend has dedicated uppers to let each cowitness. The Ultimak allows at least the T1/H1 and PA Micro, and possibly the TRS-25, but I'm not sure how the rest of the dots out there sit on it. I don't believe the SPARC will cositness on anything with the AK.

I had an Ultimak on my AK with a Primary Arm Micro dot sight. The Ultimak is easy to install and their CS is top notch if you have any questions. Really the only downside to it is that being solid metal it will get pretty warm if you do any rapid or sustained firing. You'll learn after a few burns.

I ended up deciding that I preferred the traditional look on my AK and will save the red dots for ARs, so I took it off and eventually sold it. But the product itself I give 2 thumbs up.

Late to the party, but ...

I have Ultimak gas tubes on a couple of AKMs and on an AMD-65 with Bushnell TRS-25s on them (almost identical to Primary Arms micro) and had a PA Micro on one for a while, too. Perfect lower 1/3 co-witness. I zero my irons for a 6:00 hold, then sit the red dot right on top of it. Great combo, even though the VTAC light mount is a little high looking thru the tube and eats into my irons-view (need to switch light mounts). I have run close to 500 rounds on a hot day with little cooling/down time and have never had a problem with an Ultimak combined with PA Micro or TRS-25.

Thread revive - how is the MI + T1 working for you? Trying to decide between side mount or rail mount of my PA micro.

Well, I swapped it out for an Ultimak and K-Var handguard two months ago lol. Couldn't be happier. Love the MI rail, but for the weight and bulk, the Ultimak/K-var setup is just superior. I have a pic of it on the last page of the AK pic thread. I got an Ultimak just to try, so I put it on my SGL-21, and used it side-by-side my Saiga with the MI rail... no comparison for me. The Ultimak offered a better grip and less weight. The MI definitely worked great, and if you like using a foregrip, it's still the way to go. But I found that I preferred having a slimmer front end. Still prefer both to side mounts, although I wouldn't be bothered at all using a side mount. I just like the optic being up front.

EDIT - Rifle with MI HERE, rifle with Ultimak HERE.
