Wake County Action Pistol League for novice?

Hi all. Complete novice here -- I've been to the range a handful of times and have put maybe a couple hundred rounds through paper targets. I'm working my way up to an IDPA match, but I'd kinda like to start with something a bit more forgiving. I'm still at the stage where I worry that I'll do something dumb and get disqualified if I'm under too much pressure (or more likely just embarrass myself).

Would the Action Pistol League at the Wake County Firearms Education and Training Center a pretty low-key intro to competition? I've heard that it is, but I just wanted to hear some more opinions. Thanks!

Not my intent to take anything away from WCFETC's matches, but we're very novice-friendly at H2O Fowl Farms. We run IDPA every second Saturday starting at 0900 and would love to have you shoot with us. We'll help you thru the first match jitters and will do all we can to keep you from embarrassing yourself (you won't). Next match is 8Jun13.

We ALL started where you are now.

Now...I'll get out of the way so someone else can chime in and tell bxojr how great the matches are at Wake County!

+1 trcubed, My 14yr old daughter just did her first one there last week end. Go with the intent of having fun and not worring about the score and the will be no pressure. Coharie in Clinto has one this coming saturday, another great place for new shooters.

I started shooting at the Wake county match and now I help run them. We keep the match very beginner friendly and are always willing to help new shooters work through the jitters. All you need is a strong side holster and a minimum of two magazines. The scoring is time plus points which encourages accuracy over speed. There are usually 4 stages to a match with a round count around 60-75. The match is on the 3rd Monday each month (next one is May 20th) and starts at 6:30pm with registration at 6pm.

Feel free to PM me if you want more specifics on the matches and what to expect. Several of the regulars at the Wake county match also frequent H20 like myself. Both are a good place to get started depending on what works better for your schedule.

If your daughter was the young girl on the squad that I SO'd, you have done an outstanding job with her. She has great control over the firearm, not to mention during her first action pistol match. She even had to deal with a couple of weapon stoppages which she handled fabulous. Good job.

OK, I think I've been convinced to get my feet wet at the Wake County match this coming Monday, and then try IDPA at H20 in June. Assuming I can figure out how to sign up for the Wake match!

If you're willing to travel an hour there is a PCCA match at Caswell Ranch Saturday and an IDPA match on Sunday. The PCCA matches are very new guy friendly, the round count will be under 50 with limited movement. All you need is an outside the waistband holster and a spare mag. Eye and ear protection also.

Hope to see you there.

The match starts at noon.

How exactly do you get signed up for this match. I'd love to shoot this match since its only like 2 mins fom my house or 5 with the new shopping center.
They have recently changed the way registration is done. At this point, the best way to get on the list is to get the info off of the flyer in the lobby the next time you are at the range.

Mondays match is full already.

I am a newb too. Cannot answer towards action pistol league but just did my first USPSA match in Statesville and will be doing my first IDPA this coming Saturday. It seems to me that everybody we met on Sunday were great people who really enjoy what they do and were extremely patient with the new guys. I will assume for the moment that 99.9% of the people you meet will be the same way. Everybody was very helpful with advise and keeping us calm. Focus on safety! Me and my buds biggest goal was to 1) not shoot somebody 2) not shoot ourselves, and 3) not get disqualified. I think it will be all about the attitude you approach it with. I have to say that Sunday was the most fun I have had in a long time especially once my hands stopped shaking so much
