For the longest time those of us in the sport was cleaning out all mail order businesses that we knew of. Actually the panic buy at the start was just a panic for us and those suppliers we deal with most of the time, wallyworld was safe. Then something happened, can't quite put my thumb on it but I think in December it hit the masses.
All of the sudden Wallmart is out of everything. Let's be real here the average shooter buy's a couple of boxes a year if that, this is John Q. Public. I think the panic streched out to all the others from shooters to the regular home gun owner. I never thought that wallmart had that great of a selection so I never bought much there other than .22's or an occasional white box if I was in a bind.
So either John Q. Public has fallen in line with panic buying like the rest of us OR Wallmart had such a HUGE HUGE distribution center that it took them a good part of 6+ months to deplete their storage pool and have not been able to restock from Winchester, Remington and the others. I think it's the latter and that's bad if the big companies are not re-stocking the ever allmighty wallmart just think how bad the smaller distributors are going to be restocking to re-supply the local gun stores. Wallmart must buy more ammo for inventory at distribution locations than probably all the wholesalers put together that sell to Mom and Pop FFL!
Only way this is going to stop is if the entire gun community just wakes up and stops all the buying. Let them all restock and ramp up production for a few months. Wishfull thinking but I doubt it will ever happen, now if you can excuise me while I go out patrolling the stores to buy each and every box of ammo I can find! Even if I don't have a gun for it, maybe some day I will buy one of that caliber.
