This is what happens when you take liberty for granted, then you go elsewhere and unleash your stupid. I hate it for him since naivety is his only crime, and this is a tough lesson.

(CNN)North Korea has sentenced American student Otto Frederick Warmbier to 15 years hard labor for crimes against the state, a North Korean official confirmed to CNN Wednesday.

Warmbier had traveled to Pyongyang on a trip organized by Young Pioneer Tours, a China-based travel company. He was arrested on January 2, 2016, as he was about to board a plane to leave the country.

Warmbier is escorted at the North Korean Supreme Court on Wednesday, March 16, 2016.

In an emotional press conference last month, the 21-year-old student at the University of Virginia admitted to attempting to steal a banner with a political slogan from his hotel in the North Korean capital. It is not known whether Warmbier made the admission under duress.

Appearing to read from a statement, he said: "I committed the crime of taking down a political slogan from the staff holding area of the Yanggakdo International Hotel."

"I never, never should have allowed myself to be lured by the United States administration to commit a crime in this country," he said tearfully, as he begged for forgiveness.

"I wish that the United States administration never manipulate people like myself in the future to commit crimes against foreign countries. I entirely beg you, the people and government of the DPRK, for your forgiveness. Please! I made the worst mistake of my life!"

The North Korean government alleges Warmbier was encouraged to commit the "hostile act" by a purported member of an Ohio church, a secretive university organization and even the CIA.

The tour company he traveled with said on its website it is aware of his sentencing and that it should "be viewed in similar context of previous cases of Americans being sentenced in the DPRK."

Kenneth Bae and Matthew Miller are the most recent American detainees who have been released by North Korea.

Both were accused of perpetrating "hostile acts" against North Korea; Miller spent less than a year in custody after being sentenced to six years hard labor, and Bae, facing a 15-year sentence, was held for nearly two years.

The pair secured their freedom in late 2014.

Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson told The New York Times he met with two North Korean diplomats on Tuesday to lobby for Warmbier's release.

Richardson is a veteran diplomat and a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Uhhh....the current administration told him to steal a banner from a hotel wall? Can't you find all the propaganda you want from Best Korea online? It's no secret they like themselves

Obviously he wanted a souvenir but they wanted him to speak their narrative, it's just stupid.

Like people who get caught stealing or with drugs in Singapore. You're done

On one hand the kid was doubly stupid, first to go to NK, second to pull that stunt and as the saying goes, play stupid games....

On the other hand I am loath to take any crap from that pissant nation and would be looking to see if we have any fusion warheads that are due to expire and let them see a real nuclear test.

First of all, the guy was stupid for going to North Korea in the first place.

Second, IF he actually took down said banner, he's an utter moron. Do NOT...I repeat, do NOT intentionally do stupid things in another foreign country, like break their laws. When in Rome, expect to feed the lions by hand, up close and personal, if you violate their laws because you WILL be charged and tried in accordance with THEIR laws.

Third, he should be released. AFTER caning the fuque out of him. And maybe having him personally observe how the next state execution is performed, just to put the fear of God in him.

Especially true in

a) countries with widespread corruption where you, as a foreigner, are vulnerable and will never win against a local, much less a local cop
and
b) countries that are looking for any excuse to extort or embarrass the United States, because you will rapidly become a pawn for them.

You might get away (with light punishment) with this stupidity in western Europe or commonwealth nations... do it in a third world nation that doesn't like you because of your passport and you screwed yourself.

Ha. I'm still alive in China. Even the Chinese think NoKo is crazy. They go to SoKo for vacations. Never NoKo.
In SoKo, they get the kids to stop misbehaving by telling them they will send them to NoKo. :D

BTW, I'm corrupting my colleagues here. Since everything that is in digital format is available for free streaming in CHina, I told them to look up Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. Now they are watching it.
Also, The Interview is available to watch on line in China. Ha!

He was a dumb ass and he's still a dumb ass. He's not taking responsibility for his dumb ass actions, he's blaming the US administration. He's a typical example of the "everyone gets a trophy" generation.
