Back in mid-January, my brother and I sold an airplane to a company located in another state. Recently, I received a tax bill from the county for 2016 property tax on this aircraft. Not knowing that this aircraft was still subject to local tax since we sold it after Dec. 31st, 2015.... I emailed the county tax dept. a copy of the bill of sale and tax bill for said aircraft on Thursday, July 21st.
Yesterday morning, I received a call from the county tax dept. The lady I spoke with told me that since we listed it as our property for 2016, we owed the tax. No argument from me on that statement.
However....... this woman went on to tell me that if I had our CPA email her a statement that the aircraft was in fact sold, and the sale date was prior to Jan. 1st, 2016, then she would wave the tax due. She stressed to me to make sure I changed the sale date to a date prior to Jan. 1st, 2016.
This conversation was recorded btw. But that doesn't matter because I already know what I am going to do and it will not require me to pull the recording.
I'm just interested to hear some of your thoughts on the matter. Like I previously stated, I know what to do.
