Everything else is available including ammo, Seems that Powder is getting hard to find and seems to cost $$$$$$$$ more lately.

Easy answer... More reloaders than there were a year ago... and we're all keeping more powder than we used to because of the self induced shortage. Same thing as 22...
+1000 on that! People who've never used more than 4 pounds of powder in a year are buying 100-200 pounds and hoarding it, thereby perpetuating the shortage.

BTW - at an average of 5 gr/cartridge, a 4 pound jug will reload 5600 rounds. That's 112 boxes of 50. How much do YOU shoot a year?

Oh just wait, you think its bad now, hold on for a powder ride from hell.

Date this post guys see if I am right in 13 months.

John
I'm curious as to why you say this. I talked to a commercial reloaded recently, and they told me their distributors informed them that pistol powder would be nil through second quarter 2015. Your comments seem to say it will be longer than that. Why?

3 times that in pistol and rifle load is over 20gr and shooting 7-8 thousand so 2600 per 8 pounds 24 lbs per year

For the record... I'm not getting on folks for stocking up... I'm just explaining that's the why. There are people though that do it out of compulsion rather than for practical reasons. I know guys that shoot a few hundred rounds a month that have enough powder and lead to last most of us more than a life time. Once you're in the habit of stocking up it's easy to just keep doing it. Can't be too safe right? ;)

Heck... I have more rifle powder right now than I'll use in a couple years I bet. Bought it from others who were selling and figured why not. Worst case I trade for other stuff I need!

Like I said... we are our own worst enemies when it comes to spreading panic. ;)
Even when it's not gun related...

As for the powder situation. We have more shooters and people that want to reload then ever before adding to the perceived "shortage". Stuff may not be as prolific as it has been, but that's what happens when demand goes through the roof and supply doesn't increase.

But , but, but free markets are supposed to solve these kinds of problems.
Regulation on production methods slows down the ability for supply to meet demand. Unlike AR parts, powder manufacturers can't just crank up another facility without the EPA,Osha, and who knows who else getting in the way. Just like gas, the supply will be outstripped by demand until a price point is reached in which the buyer is willing to pay (higher prices) and the seller is willing to sell.

I've been using Alliant Unique on my 38's but just remember a little goes a long way....

I just wound up with Unique becaue I made a list of powders that would work for 38/357 before I went looking.. When My number 1 choice didn't pan out I took what was on the list that would work...And I have to say, I'm not disappointed with this powder at all...

I spent a while looking today. Didn't see any pistol powders at all. There are a few rifle powders in stock. As much as I would like to stock up on reloading supplies, I guess I will use this opportunity to buy factory ammunition instead.

I stopped by a LGS the other day south of Greenville at the hydraulic hose place that had quite a bit of rifle powder. I got just a bit of BLC2 and IMR 4895 and left plenty on the shelf. I was not really looking for pistol powder but didn't notice any that I need with a very quick look.
