I see threads about and know others who are cutting cost by dropping there home phone in order to keep cell phones.

Cost aside..... why do YOU need a cell phone.

Are you that important?
Is there anything your family can not do with out you?
Do you enjoy taking your work home with you?
If they did call with an emergency they just wasted valuable response time trying to get in touch with someone who can not help.

My main gripe is WHY you need a cell phone?

I have one because I have to for my work....and we don't have a home phone anymore.

I have to have one for work. I have a personal cell phone so in case my wife needs me for anything, or other family members. Like car breaks down, or locked out of the house, etc...

Obviously if its an emergency she knows to call 911 first and then worry about calling me.

Had I not had one with me Sept 22nd, 2007, I would have lain at the base of a white oak tree for several hours with a broken back and in shock.............I may not have made it.

Yes, I am that important as these two are counting on me to come home.

Why have only a home phone?

Are you too important to not be bothered by friends and family?

Do you enjoy getting all the way home from work only to have the wife say, "we need milk"?

Do you like paying for long distance?

Do you hate being able to call for a dinner reservation while you're out on the town?

Do you enjoy being out of touch when you're away from your home?

Do you like answering the phone for telemarketers and politicians?

I have a cell phone because it's less expensive than a home phone, it's portable and yes, I am that important.

I have mine to keep in touch with family and friends.
It is cheaper than adding long distance to home phone.

I do not use mine for work. Work is for work, home is for home. The 2 do not mix.
They are cheaper for that, but does each person in the household have to have a phone.

I have friends who's kids never leave the yard and they have a cell phone. They are 11.

Why have only a home phone? Why Not

Are you too important to not be bothered by friends and family? YES

Do you enjoy getting all the way home from work only to have the wife say, "we need milk"? She should have gotten it on the way home.

Do you like paying for long distance? We still have one cell phone. She still thinks she needs one.

Do you hate being able to call for a dinner reservation while you're out on the town? We eat dinner as a family at home. This is a rant for another day.

Do you enjoy being out of touch when you're away from your home? Yes actually it is nice and you learn to slow down a bit.

Do you like answering the phone for telemarketers and politicians? Cell phone numbers are now published too! :)

I have a cell phone because it's less expensive than a home phone, it's portable and yes, I am that important.

I have it for work. My job requires that I am accessible all day whether I am in the office or not.

You'll really hate me because I have to have one with internet capabilities, email, and camera all for work. It has taken 4 pieces of equipment and replaced it with one small mobile piece.

I like being available to friends and family at all times. When I do not wish to be bothered, I can get away.

Home phone...pffffft.... really? Why pay for 2 when one is enough.

I like having a ballistics computer with me at the range.

Mostly, I cannot allow the future of the business to be in the hands of anyone else at this point.

Purely a convenience thing for me. Being that I pay my bill and not you, that's all that matters.

I bet you won't say that to her face...PLEASE TELL ME you only have 7 channels on your TV, and one of them is fuzzy.
Yea, I would, and then I would go get it. I get home way before her anyway.

Oh yea the TV is no longer fuzzy since the DTV change over.

Man I did not realize how attached people are to there technology.

I really stired up a hornets nest this time. LOL

I don't believe in double-paying for things. I don't have a home phone.

Why do I have a cell and not a home phone?

  • I need a phone of some sort
  • I travel a great deal. One of my 4 jobs is being a professional race mechanic (How many jobs do YOU have?). I am on the road 50+ days a year.
  • 2 of my other jobs are I.T. related. One is a small business I.T. consultant. If my customers have an emergency and need to get me I need to be available. Is this because I am *that* important? No it is because their business is *that* important to them. My other job is a web developer/web server administrator. Again - SLAs are the key here (An SLA is a "Service Level Agreement" which basically stipulates a percent uptime which MUST be maintained). If a company's e-commerce website goes down their business suffers. It is my job to fix it. If I am MIA they suffer.
  • I need access to email and the internet for my jobs for the above reasons. Additionally if I need to fix a server I can often times log in via my Blackberry and fix it - even if I am on the road at a race track in the middle of nowhere.
So taking the above into consideration it doesn't make sense to have a landline instead of a cell.

I think what YOU need to do is get off your high horse. Having a cellphone isn't always about someone's over-inflated feelings of self-worth (People who drive and talk about what to eat for dinner fall into this category). Some people actually do have a valid use for them.

When exactly did we dicide that our jobs and careers where more important then spending valuable time with friends and family?

I don't believe the man's on a "high horse". I like stimulating discussion. So does he. Thats all it is.

I do not believe that my job and career is more important than my family. I believe that my family is so important that I need to work really really hard...

Truck driver, work 12-14 hr days. I like to be able to talk to friends and family. My wife and I split a cell service. It's not cheaper than a land line but I won't pay for both. Before this job I was gone 2-3 nights a week and it was cheaper than calling cards. FWIW, I dropped my dish for an antenna in Dec. I'm only attached to some of my technology like say......the internet! :) We are having a tied to technology discussion over...wait....hold it.....a little more......THE NET!!!! OOOOHHHHH the irony. lol Sarcasm off.

I enjoy the warming glow of microwave radiation on my cheek :)

Seriously though... It costs less than a land line w. decent rate long distance/international (friends/family back home) for me and my wife to have cell phones, even with me having internet access on mine.

I'm not hugely accessible at work (I could be anywhere on property or off) so when I need some to call me during office hours a cell is a LOT easier than the front desk trying to find me.

When I'm meeting someone for a B/S/T a cell phone has saved a LOT of "where are you?" situations where the buyer/seller and I aren't familiar with each other and can't find each other in the parking lot.

My wife has MS and drives clear down to Meredith frequently for her Masters classes. I know I'm a lot more comfortable with her having a cellphone.

Really, the question should be "Why would you have a land line phone instead of a cellphone?"

I didn't realize WE did. I have bills to pay. I do what I have to. Who are you to tell me that I'm NOT spending time with family and friends? Who are you to dictate my life and how I choose to live it and what I choose to do to earn a living?

I don't have a family. I have parents and a girlfriend. My 4th job is in the family business so I spend PLENTY of valuable time with my family.

Some are saying he isn't on a "high horse" but to me and many others he isn't coming across as wanting to stimulate discussion - he is coming across as an opinionated judgmental ass with an "I know better than you" attitude.

"I do no better then you" :8:

One of the points I was trying to make is that by carrying a cell phone you kind of have an expectation to answer it when it rings there for giving up your privacy and time to yourself.

If we agreed on all points there would be no need for this discussion.
