Is it feasible to use a 308 Neck size die to neck size 30-06 brass?
My pops asked me today and never having tried it I told him I'd find out.

I think what he is talking about is set the die up as normal then back off about 1/8 to 1/4" and you are not working the full case or shoulder. just using the ball expander and size the neck enough to hold the bullet.

years back RCBS sold and gave neck sizing die spacer.
like the 357/38 dies come with a spacer.
set up like normal lock the set screw and add the spacer for neck only.

How do you do that?
Back the die way out, until it is touching nothing when you bring the arm down. Screw the die in one round at a time until it begins to reach the neck. It helps to paint the neck with a marker, so you can see what is being worked. If you use a decapping die first, you only need to work an eighth of an inch or so of the neck to be able to hold a bullet. Otherwise, you may need to resize the entire neck to get the primer decapped. If you bring the die down enough to resize the entire neck, and then give it another half turn, you will set the shoulder back just a touch. That is called a partial full length resize and is also known as shoulder bumping.

A 308 neck sizing die, with the possible exception of the collet dies mentioned above, should be able to size 30/06 if there is enough adjustment available to raise up the die to take care of the extra length of the 30/06 case. I use a 308 neck sizer designed for an old hand tool for both chamberings the few times I want to neck size. I have multiple rifles in both chamberings and generally full length resize all cases.

Keep in mind when trying to use a FL die to neck size that the lower part of the case may also be contacted by and squeezed by the die. This can cause the shoulder to be pushed a bit forward. It might be wise to try a few to see if they will chamber before you load a bunch of them. I ran into that situation trying to use a FL die to neck size some 243. I now have both FL and neck sizing dies for 243.
