30-06 or 54r for protection?? What monster did you piss off?

Surplus 54r is running about $90-100 per 440 rounds. You won't find 30-06 for that price at the moment. Of course, that's all steel core stuff that won't really expand on impact. Like Wahoo said, ballistics between the two are pretty much the same. There are a few brands of 54r available with more hunting style projectiles but they'll be priced pretty much the same as 30-06 hunting rounds.

So let me add to the discussion. With my T53 and a 30-30, do I really need to think about any other rifle at this point? Theyre both fine for hunting arent they?

Am an '06 admirer but have a few Mosins and a bit of ammo stored. Picking up a couple more shortly and another case. Have had to quit using '06s for deer hunting because of my rotator cuff problems. Picked up a heavy 25-06 last month from a member that only "pushes" a bit. To answer your question--IMO an '06 has better ballistics and ammo will be available most anywhere you go in the world. 54Rs have a slightly larger bore (usually .310-.315) and the rifles are mostly of war time grade. Reloadable brass is hard/expensive to find. My vote is for an '06.

I'm fairly certain a black hole would open up if I fire either my mosin or 16" Garand in the house.:)
you owe me a new keyboard kind sir. that is some funny stuff there

.30-06 due to ammo availability and weapon variety to fire it. I've never shot a 7.62x54 so I'm biased toward the '06. I suspect that there aren't too many rifles commonly found in the USA that are chambered for the 54 when compared to the '06.
Probably only a few million mosins... lol I'd bet you can take any street in the south and find a Mosin behind every third door or so. :)

never heard of a .30-06 getting rimlocked. Just saying :D

I have heard that the 7.62x54 is a more inherently accurate than the 30-06. That is the reason high power shooters in the US have selected it for their competition round. Just my 2 cents...
As a battle round give me the 30-06...what an ass kicker it is!

I think you're thinking of 7.62x51 NATO (308 winchester) It is a very accurate cartridge... and matches the power and performance of 30-06 military ammo.

No have 2 06 rifles just wanting cheap bulk to put back I just want something to put back I can shoot in my 06's. Armageddon is coming
To be perfectly clear and to avoid somebody NOT stating the obvious.

.30-06 and 7.62x54 are NOT interchangeable cartridges. You cannot stuff a 7.62x54 cartridge into your .30-06 and shoot it. Well, you could probably make it go BANG! but I would not want to be standing next to you when you did.

They are apples and oranges...chevys and fords....dogs and cats. Don't do it.

If you are planning on "stocking up" then 54r is hard to beat. 440 round cans for $80-100 are sealed, easy to stack and pack, and relatively easy to find for now. In comparison, 440 rounds of -06 will be at least twice that.

Also, you can pick up a couple $150 Mosins to stack with your stash.

.30-06 is better in any conceivable way and anyone who thinks otherwise can march their commie asses back to Mother Russian.

Now that that's out of the way, you cannot shoot 7.62x54r in a .30-06 chamber. It won't chamber. If you want to stock up, get into reloading, learn to load, and keep a lot of components on-hand. It doesn't take long to throw together a range day's worth of plinker '06 loads.

EDIT - also, nothing wrong with 7.62x54r... I like it, it's more pleasant than the hot 180-200gr .30-06 loads, for sure.
