Just my ignorance and merely a question, but why is domestic adoption so expensive? Where/to who does that money go? It seems like if you're not absolutely loaded but want to help a kid you're SOL. I understand not making a kid apart of a family that can't support them, but paying $25k when a lot of they could go towards actually raising a kid seems like an expensive prerequisite test that is a waste (and I don't mean the adoption was a waste, I mean the money being misdirected).

VERY little of it goes to the birth mother to cover living expenses while she's pregnant. Some of it goes for medical costs, not more than you'd pay for a delivery if you were pregnant.

The rest?

- Background study
- Home study (absolute fucking joke....don't get me started)
- Lawyers
- Adoption agency fees
- Court Costs
- etc.

We met our birth mother about 6 weeks before she delivered, during that time we (via our lawyer) paid rent, food, transportation, etc. But she certainly was not getting rich of us.

Yup, normally people who speak of children that way have never experienced children of their own. If someone referred to one of my kids to my face as a "rug rat" I would be forced to throttle them about the face and neck...like a sir. View attachment 73999
How could something so cute come from something so...not? Don't worry dude, same thing happened in my house.;)

Did she blindfold you right before you smelled the nail polish? Not saying it did or didn't happen to me with my 2, but we made sure there was an extra vial of remover, just in case.

She's a cutie pie. Daddy daughter time rocks!

I allow her to paint my toenails...fingernails on special occasions. I mean...when she asks it's impossible to say no.

I can understand supporting the birth mother, medical costs and some legal fees but the rest of it seems unfortunately bureaucratic.

My wife and I have talked about adopting a child in the future. I am going to assume that having firearms properly stored in your house was not an issue in the home study. Is this correct?
Firearms and ammunition need to be locked away.

Guys, this is an awesome post and God bless anyone who is willing to make this difference in the life of of a child.
I know this process can be expensive, but make sure you are dealing with a competent tax preparer, Uncle Sam will let you take certain deductions and gives you special tax credits for years if you decide to adopt... It doesn't alleviate the financial burden, but it can take a little of the sting out of it.
Good Luck.

I have two close friends who adopted--one kid is perfect and the other is a maniac--normal odds versus normal childbirth in my view... costs will run according to the way you choose--agency or private. Both of my friends went private and the costs were closer to $75,000 all in..

Good luck and bless you for having the courage to do it.
