AMD-65 parts kit; nervous to build

I bought this kit and should have it in hand soon. A receiver from Nodak won't be available till March, so it'll be a while until I can really start on it. I figure I can buy the various US parts I'd need in the mean time.

Problem is, I'm already getting nervous about my ability to construct this. I've spent hours reading how-to's and examples, and it just seems like so much...

I guess step one is that I should attend any nearby build parties just to see a build in action and help out where I can. Maybe I can find someone that has built a few that would be willing to go one-on-one with me (I'll provide beverage of choice and food!).

What else can I do now?

Who are the professionals within 3-4 hours of Raleigh that build AK's, just in case I decide to go that route?

Here's the ad and pictures I got from the seller. He also told me that it includes a Tapco G2 trigger group. Sorry about the pics, but photobucket isn't working so I can't resize them.

i have a complete parts kit, minus reciver for an AK/AMD-65 for sale. i would prefer a straight across trade for a JCP .40 but would sell for 200$ cash. these kts are curently selling for 250-300 on GB and AA but i wanted to give you guys first crack at it. Nodakspud has recivers for 85$ for these. pics incoming when i get home from work tonite.

OK heres the details and pics. the kit was bought from another person at a gun club i used to belong to. he bought it and intended on doing a screw build on a joeken flat. after joeken went under he traded the kit to me. he had removed all the rivets and threaded the rivet holes so this gun can be built with either rivets or screws. i installed the barrel extension with silver solder so the barrel is legal 16". the bore is good to very good (sorry i couldnt get a decent pic of the bore) and the bolt head doesnt show any wear from corrosive ammo use. the stock is the folding model and all teh parts including the rear trunnion are there. there is also a bag of small pins and other parts that isnt in the pics.

ETA Oh and for anotehr 25$ ill throw in a period correct hungarian 20 rd mag for it too.

AKs are HORRIBLE to build!!!! Tell ya what, I'll take it off your hands for $100, just so it doesn't clutter up your house.

Seriously tho, we're working on getting a build party together soon, hopefully in FEB. Get your parts together and join us! The time consuming demil is already done, bending a flat won't be that hard when you have the right tools and expierenced people around. that should make a nice rifle.

Looks good, but where's the other pistol grip? That won't be too hard to build on a Nodak receiver, but you will have to press out the barrel unless you plan on doing a screw build. One word of advice though, alot of these early AMD kits were bought and buggered up by folks wanting to do screw builds. Check the depth of the holes drilled through the front trunnion rivets and make sure that they didn't drill into the barrel. I bought a pristine, unfired AMD kit at a gunshow that someone had started drilling out the rivets, but had not pressed out the barrel. Once I pressed the barrel out, I realized that they'd almost drilled into the chamber of the barrel.

Well, I was planning on replacing the pistol grips with US parts to help with 922 compliance. Wonder if that would be 1 part or 2, hmmm.

Will definitely check those holes. I really hope the barrel is undamaged - those things are impossible to find for the AMD.

Compliance parts will be: receiver(1), pistol grip(1-2), FCG(3), gas piston(1). That gives me 6 even if the PG's only count as one part.

my first build was a AMD-65.. and yeah i went the screw it together route.

but it has held up for 3 years with no problems, and is still my favorite AK type to shoot !!! the muzzle brake makes a different kind of "POP". just feels solid :D take your time and build it right....you'll love it
