BLC-2, 4064, 8208, Varget, CFE 223, and 4895 will all work. It's all in what you want and what you can get really. BLC-2 and CFE 223 will meter great out of a powder drop. The others it would be better getting an electric powder dispenser. Personally I used 4064 with 168 & 175 bullets.

Yeah I know just don't want to have to mess with removing the crimp. I don't have a swager so I'd have to do it by hand and that just doesn't sound like any fun lol
I have the RCBS swager kit mounted in a dedicated single stage press, but Half the time I remove enough crimp with the $3 lee case chamfer tool. Take about 2.5 twists and you can seat a primer easily.

i mounted a lyman case reamer tool in a drill press. put it on low and all you got to do is kiss the case and crimp is history

My wife frowns on running power tools on the coffee table while we are watching Netflix. But yeah, million ways to remove a crimp

Dillon makes an overpriced tool for that.
Yeah thought about it, then got a C press instead. All my stuff has to serve more than a single function due to space

Im sure this one works as well, but my C reloader was $39 and includes breech lock so i can spin out the swager die and spin in my decapper in about 2 secs.
Plus i dont swage 1000 cases at once, usually small batches of whatever i shot that day which arent all crimped. Plus i try to keep the ones I have already swaged marked.

Back to the BLC-2. I've found it to be an excellent performer, although velocities aren't as high as I'd like (18" barrel). But, it gets touchy with temperatures at max loadings. One day I had excellent performance in the morning (in the 40's) and sticky extraction and flattened primers in the afternoon (about 70 IIRC), to the point I stopped shooting it. I was loading 175gr Hornady AMAX's.
I've been wanting to try 4895, a classic good powder for the .308 and experiment with CFE223.

BCL2 or W748 old powders........not very popular in Win 308.

The new TAC, 8208 and CFE 223 and RL16 along with IMR 4166.

Me the 3 powders I have the most time in the 308 Win are RL 15, IMR 4064 and Varget........all very good performers in the 308 Win.

"A spherical powder, BL-C(2) began as a military powder used in the 7.62 NATO and naturally has applications for 308 Winchester"
right off Hodogen web sight . for me it is a good powder for .223 Rem. match rounds , and I reload every thing .308 Win. hunting load and target loads

For those loading on a progressive, BLC-2 is one of the best choices available for heavy bullets in 308.
As already stated, it is a little temp sensitive.
I'm making 2650 fps with it in a 20" bbl (175gr SMK/AMAX)...but I am slightly over max. On hot days, I carry a rubber mallet.

Like you, I started out using BL-C2. But after trying Varget I was sold. 43 gn with a 165 or 168 gn bullet. However, with that short barrel I would go with 47 gn with a 150 gn bullet. You will get more velocity, less kick and that short barrel will likely show better accuracy with the lighter bullet. But always start at at the min grain specified and work your way up. But neither of those loads are considered a "Hot" load. I had good luck without trying hard with getting good accuracy out the the Nosler Ballistic tips than I did with the Accubonds but your experience with them may vary. The ballistic tips however can be explosive at very high velocity but to a lesser degree at lower velocity's. Over time I have had good success with both the Barnes TTXS and the Sierra BTHP bullets. The Barnes TTSX all copper bullet will completely penetrate a deer 90+ % of the time making for a good blood trail. But the Sierra's do well also at half the cost. Good luck.
