IMO common sense says, "If I'm buying an electric car I should have plans for charging it." I wonder if he made any attempt to work something out with the school? Asking is the best option. Next best is going back after the fact and trying to work it out.

I do think the arrest is overboard. Everyone would have been better served if LE just mediated a solution instead of throwing a nuke on the "problem".

If he drove a 8k lb diesel guzzling truck this would have never happened.
If he took diesel from a pump without paying what would have happened?

Sounds like the DA's office made the call other wise you would think it wouldnt have taken 11 days to be arrested. This a really petty case but with the ever growing popularity I can only imagine that we will hear more of these stories. I could see taking charges if someone had secretly ran an extenstion cord to thier neighbors house and been using it every night.

I think the article sums it up - its about principle
yes the monetary value was low, but should we turn a blind eye cause its not over XX dollars that someone stole?

His excuse of "there was noone around" sounds bogus - you mean there wasnt a single school employee at this game the entire time? Or just not right where he was at that exact moment?
Sounds like he looked around, wasnt convenient for him to go find someone and he plugged in his car

Im fine with this
stop it now before it gets out of control

I couldn't tell you how many wasted hours of investigators time is taken up with people stealing a can of beer or honey bun from gas station. Like it or not the person is stealing no matter dollar amount.

If he siphoned "just a little" gasoline from your tank, without asking, would you be OK with it?
If you drive an all electric vehicle you should know the vehicle's limits. Just the same as a gasoline vehicle owner learns not to drive until he runs out of gas. The owner has to take responsibility. There is the problem, no one thinks they should be responsible for anything any more.

I agree with you - theft is theft
and if we let this guy off then all who ONLY steal a nickle worth of energy will be set free too...yeah, that could get out of control quick

you buy the car, be prepared for any consequences, both positive and negative - sure youre not buying gas, but that doesnt mean you can just take energy from anyone and anywhere you'd like

I wouldn't have arrested him. Instead I would've told him he needs to get permission to plug up in the future. The technology is growing but still new so you're bound to have some never before seen situations like this come up as people transition to alternative fuel vehicles. Not saying what he did wasnt wrong, just saying it wasnt worth an arrest.

I agree with you... and that sort of attitude is exactly why I wouldn't make it in today's no-tolerance school system. Somewhere along the way, I'd wear a tshirt with a slogan on it or something, maybe I'd hit someone with a paper airplane, I'd give a couple of advil to another student, I'd play a song with the phrase "I like Big Butts" or I'd come in on Wednesday saying "What day is it? HUMP DAY!!!"

The School Police would cuff me, arrest me and book me for communicating a threat, pushing drugs, assault, discrimination against skinny and medium-butted ladies and sexual assault.

I'd be expelled quicker than Shawn White on a Snowboard.

Your sarcasm meter appears to be out of calibration.

So if one of you goes to your kids school, or the public library, or WalMart, or McDonalds, or wherever, and you bring your cell phone charger and plug in while you're there - you're OK with getting arrested for that, too?
I see this as a business providing amenities for its customers. Kid goes to the school, your checking out books at the library, buying things at walmart/mcdonads.. Not entirely the same IMO but i get what your saying.
