Anyone know anything about the Asheville Rifle & Pistol club? I think they moved from the former location on 191. I'm curious as to the membership, fees, range specs & facilities, matches held, etc. I shoot at an indoor range here in Hendersonville but sure would like access to an outdoor range or private area to go and safely shoot. I really don't know anything about membership in the ARPC. Any info would be appreciated.

They're still on 191. I'm a member.

$75/year. Attend 4 club meetings (1st Monday of the month, 6pm Skyland Fired Department) for membership. Must have a CHP or obtain a Pistol Permit for membership.

100 & 200 yd rifle (200 under repair)
25 & 50 yard pistol

Very much a bench and bullseye oriented club. A Range Officer must be in attendance for the range to be open. They print a schedule of RO's each month and mail it to you. You can't become a range officer for 3 years.

They run some nice matches that are open to the public, some "fun" and some serious.

I'd be happy to host you for an afternoon after the holidays are over.

Honestly?...I got pissed off at the place several years ago. I had to endure a political meeting in order to join (it was an election year) and every time I went....the R.O. never showed...or the back-up! (no shooting without a R.O.) I got fed up and didn't renew.
Keep in mind this was at least 10 years ago.

After the 3 years, you can train to be an RSO and opoen the range whenever you like. YOU don't need to be the "scheduled" guy to shoot, just need to be RSO blessed. I figure it's just a long hazing period that's a PIA. But, again, it's $75/year. I just make sure to call ahead before I go to make sure the RSO is there. And I've learned to tell who on the schedule is reliable.

Thanks for the info. Not sure this is what I'm looking for. Especially having to rely on someone else ( R.O.) for shooting priviledges. I have heard it is mainly a "stand and punch holes in paper" type range. I'm more interested in some "defensive hangun" type practice, though it would be nice to punch some holes with a rifle at 100 yards on occasion.
Anyway, thanks again for the info, WNCseabee.

Hey Indy, thanks a bunch for the link. That is very exciting. I'll difinately drive over there and check it out. For $15 and unlimited shooting that would be worth driving over there.

And garandman, yeah, I'm interested in what is going on down in Spartanburg.

Here's a really great place: http://apsagunclub.tripod.com/ The friendliest, most laid back folks. It's a fun place to go shoot some faster paced stuff...
Thanks Brenainn. Good to know about this!
Seabee, I went over to the Brevard range this week. First class facility, very clean, well set up etc. $15 is pretty good for unlimited shooting. Heck, you can take the rifles, shotguns, pistols and shoot all day or until the ammo runs out! It is a nice facility though.

WNC Seabee, I am very interested in joining the Asheville rifle and pistol club....I have a few questions though....I am still technically a SC resident where we don't need to have permits for pistols so I don't have a pistol permit or my CCW.....also I work 2nd shift so I am at work when the meetings are being held...I would like any advice on this that you could give me! Thanks!

I don't care for the asheville rifle pistol club. Started to join up .Only set up for bull's eye match type handgun shooting on the pistol part. No where for you to work with childern and pistols at ranges closer than 25 yards and no 22 rifles for kids period. No cc pratice of any kind. Rifle was ok for 100 yards as the 200 was closed when i was looking to join and also lots of in fighting between memebers at meetings at the time. Also had a real nice old guy that was a range office at the rifle range but he was deafand he sat in his car and you had to walk up to him and hollar at him to get his attention to go cold. Nice guy but should not be an officer there. . To bad they did not buy land around them when they had the chance to.

The asheville practical buch is moveing to yancey county to triggers traps and trout for monthly shoots , maybe.

I just joined ARPC, mostly for the rifle range.
hardluk1, they just opened a new enclosed close range pistol range ajoining the regular pistol range.
No, there is no facility for CC practice etc. Lots of paper punching which, admittedly, isn't the most exciting pistol shooting.
They still have the 200 yard range closed. Upon completion of the overhead baffles the 200 yard range will reopen. They also have hopes of having an area for prone, sitting, kneeling shooting once the baffles are in place.

There are a bunch of crusty "old guard" types but I believe most of their "prohibitive rules" for lack of a better term, are in place because of liability issues.

Actually they have a pistol "fun shoot" and a fun, informal .22 sillhouette shoot the first Saturday of each month(open to the public by the way).

It's not ideal but overall it will do for my current interest which is developing rifle loads. I intend to do some of the .22 silhouette shoots too. Seems like great fun.

While I agree that the club can be a bit uptight and the pistol range is primarily a Bullseye setup, let me correct some of your factual mistakes given recent changes.

1. There is now a 5-15 yard bay on the pistol range.
2. Kids and .22 rifles are a regular fixture down at the rifle range. ranges positions from 25 -- 100 yards.

I would not go back to the asheville range. Unaka has a better rifle range with 200 yards with no real restrictions. If i wish to practice with my pistol at a longer distance great than 50 yards I can shoot on the rifle range there . And can go to the forestry range for draw and fire drills. Maybe I can take some small amount of credit for the asheville group for haveing a 5 to 15 yards range . I gave the pres. at the time a hard time about have no where for a child to learn about shooting in a fun way and have shooting games too. And retire the old guys from being range officers that are to crusty or just can't hear . Don't get me wrong, Some really nice guys there but at the time I was investing to join there was way to much in fighting with between older members that let it get into the shape was in. They should have bought more land when they had the chance. Now they will be restricked to death over time.
