I started a new thread rather than divert the other one. I'm not surprised at what happened in AL at all. College campuses are magnets for trouble. The BGs know that no one is armed. What's worse is that the students and faculty have been inculcated with the idea that to resist is wrong. I live in Durham and the students at Duke are getting the crap knocked out of them regularly both on and off campus. Less than half of the stuff that goes on makes the paper or TV. If i were a bad guy, I'd get me a nice suit and a lead pipe and I could make a fairly decent living.

I think it would be a problem as much as a solution. Even if you were a responsible gun owner doesn't mean your roommate is. I wouldn't give my roommate a sling shot. On the other hand, there have been several shootings up this way lately, and so many assaults. I personally have a blade on me at all times. If the police want to take it, they can have my $20 gerber, but the fact is, I'm a big dude but I know my limitations. I've felt hard pressed before and a knife is a false but small sense of security.
I got to ECU and there is kind of a Students for concealed carry chapter, but it hasn't gone anywhere. I don't leave my house without a gun...unless I'm going to campus. As Jones said, I always have a blade on me, as well as a surefire, but am I really going to get down and dirty in a knife fight? I doubt it.
I tried to give a presentation on CHP in a class I have, and the teacher wouldn't let me because she felt it may seem 'threatening' to some students.

There are actually 16 universities in NC that have SCCC chapters. Unfortunately, people's drive is faltering as some states start to consider legislation to legalize carry, and since we haven't had another incident that has received major news coverage.
NCSU was one of the first active SCCC chapters, and made some local progress, but ran into a brick wall with our campus admin. We started here with 24 very active members that really made progress in the area, and at the state level. Some graduated and others lost interest, and now we are down to 6 people here who are still trying. It has been said by University higher-ups that they support our right to want it, but fully disagree with us and will do everything in their power to kill any chance of it succeeding.
