Can mice run up a two story, six inch downspout?

I had my house inspected for termites a couple of days ago by an experienced exterminator. No termites, as usual, thankfully. While he was here, I asked him how the mice were making it all the way up to my attic, just as we have discussed here in another thread. Once he got outside and saw my exposed downspouts he said with all confidence that they can climb up my downspouts, especially since I have "leafguard" gutters (hooded gutters) where they are protected from predators. He said I need to cover my downspout openings at the bottoms with hardware cloth.

Can mice actually do this?

My neighbor was convinced raccoons were getting on his (2 story) roof from a tree in my yard that had a small 1/2" branch leaning over the property line that ended about a good 15 feet or more diagonally from his roof. If raccoons can weigh down a branch and then fly the 15+ feet onto his roof, I guess a mouse can climb a 2 story vertical & smooth incline.

Yes. Mice can climb dang near anything. If they can't climb inside the downspout, they can climb up between the downspout and the house. They can go right up the corner trim on your siding, straight up cedar shingles, along the cracks, up brick and mortar, etc.
