Can you adjust the Howa HACT trigger?

I've got a Howa 1500 Varminter in .22-250 and was about to order a new trigger until I read about people adjusting them. I think the articles and videos were on the pre HACT triggers (if there is even a difference) and I saw you have to figure out the right point and not over adjust it so it is still safe.

My question is should I adjust this trigger (I will happily send it to a local gunsmith but I don't know one) or should I just spend the money on a Timney or something. I love the gun but wish the trigger was a tad lighter. I looked for hours and could find nothing about people adjusting the HACT triggers.

Have the same problem myself and have done a little research but not a lot and looks like they have two different ones depending how old the rifle is. First ones were only two position safety and you are not able to adjust much and it still function. Later ones had a 3 pos and it was more adjustable. Another note on the timney triggers is if it is a two pos safety model you have to do some slight modifications to the stock for the Timney trigger to work. Let me know if you happen to find any great fixes.

You can adjust it. Turn the screws until you get the lightness and pre-travel you want, while at the same time checking the safety to make sure it works. Keep adjusting a little at the time and checking the safety. When you reach the point where the safety no longer works, take it back up just a bit and check to make sure the safety works and you will be at as low of a pull as you can safely go. Mine would adjust down to between 2-3lbs safely with almost no pre-travel and the safety still works good. Mine is at about 2 and a quarter lbs, No need for a Timney for me, as the trigger is awesome for a hunting rifle.

Yeah when I bought it I incorrectly thought it was adjustable and it is not. It is a nice trigger just a little too heavy for my liking.
OK I just re-read and seen you said HACT, that is a 2 stage trigger. The weight of pull should be adjustable from 2.5 to 3.8 lbs from my reading, the above info I gave was on a single stage howa (which I think is great), but over on some other forums I visit these HACT's are very well regarded, as with a two stage you can take up trigger creep in the first stage before squeezing through to touch off the round, thus helping with flinch and surprise of a single stage with little take up. Supposed to be set a 3lbs factory let off.

It seems to be a safer trigger for a hunting rifle, I wouldn't mind having one.

Here is a C&P from their website

"Howa is equipping each barreled action with the new Howa Actuator Controlled Trigger (HACT) system that eliminates trigger creep and lightens trigger pull. The HACT will fit all Howa M-1500 rifles that were previously equipped with their three position safety.

The HACT trigger assembly is a completely redesigned trigger and sear unit that actually creates a two-stage trigger. This allows the shooter to take up trigger creep before squeezing through to touch off the round. The HACT trigger system allows for a lighter let-off - factory set at 3 lbs - eliminating trigger jerk, or pulling off the shot because the trigger pull is too heavy.
The other improvement that the HACT offers is in safety. Most triggers use an indirect sear lock, meaning, the safety locks the trigger and the trigger locks the sear. With lightened triggers that have been worked on after the sale, this can be dangerous because a hard bump can set off the sear, even if the safety is engaged. With the new HACT trigger, we use a direct sear lock, where a cross pin locks the sear, preventing any accidental discharges.
The HACT trigger from Howa will improve your accuracy with a crisper, cleaner and lighter trigger pull. This will give you better groups and . . . cleaner harvests!"

Yeah after reading your earlier post I saw you were talking about an older trigger. The HACT doesn't have the same screws the older one does. It is not a bad trigger but would be so much nicer if it was a little lighter.

I'm wondering if it is even adjustable. I need to take it out and play with it.

I need to order a trigger pull gauge. I took it out last night and adjusted the screw on the front. It did seem to lighten the trigger a tad (I'm guessing it is around 2 lbs now which is fine) but the main thing it did was make the creep (I think that is the right term) very easy to pull up. You can pull the trigger back easily and when you hit the resistance it stays there until you add enough force for it to fire.

Even with that screw completely removed the safety worked and it would not fire no matter how fast or hard you shut the bolt. I think that is due to a new feature in the HACT trigger setup. I think it block the sear.

Yes it is a safer trigger. That front screw you see in the diagram puts pressure on that spring, so when you turn it out, it should lighten the pull. I think the 2 stage is neat for a hunting rifle myself. Mine is set a just a hair over 2lbs, and with that old 3 point system I could see a very hard bump firing the rifle once you loosen that screw enough.

Let me know how you like it, I am debating on changing mine out. Heck I might swap you the single stage trigger if you want to. (after hunting season that is ) LOL
My rifle is set, an I don't want to take it apart. :D
The single stage howa can be adjusted for no pre-travel if that is what you like. Mine, you just touch it with a little more than 2lbs and it goes off, no travel
