CCI MiniMag vs Winchester SuperX

A little while ago I posted a thread about these new Winchester SuperX packaged in the same style 100rd plastic box as the CCI MiniMags. They seem to be priced similar also, maybe just a little less, which tells me they are trying to compete directly with MiniMags. Well I had a chance to shoot them both yesterday and here's a range report.

An interesting thing to note on the boxes is that Winchester claims a heavier bullet and 70fps more velocity:

The CCI looks to me like higher consistency/quality:

So the first thing I do is run about 5 rounds of each through through my chrono and they both range throughout the 1200s, averaging towards the high 1200s. I didn't do any math but I didn't notice any discernible difference in velocity between the two products. This was through my stock 10/22, I think it's an 18" barrel.

Then I shot a 5 shot group with the MiniMags and got this:

Then I immediately did the same with the SuperX (after one fouling shot) and got this:

Conditions were late afternoon, no wind. I was shooting off my range bag from 50yds through my 10/22 with the mounted 2X shotgun scope that lives on it (great combo IMHO BTW). Considering the pattern that I got with the SuperX (two close pairs, etc.) I thought something might be going on with my optics so I shot another 5 shot group with MiniMags and got almost as good a group as the first, I had 2 just barely outside the center ring. I forgot to do a fouling shot switching back to the MiniMags too. So either the SuperX plain suck or my 10/22 just doesn't like them.

YMMV

.22 rifles are a fickle lot. You can have 2 identical rifles and each will have it's own preference for ammo, some will do one hole groups and others look like a buckshot pattern. Keep trying as many different brands and types as possible and one will out shine all of the others. Just remember what it likes.....

I know that's true. To a point. I've done my share of 22lr shooting over the years, a lot of it at clays at 200yds, and using several different rifles of my own and of my friends. I have to say I have never had unacceptable accuracy with MiniMags, no matter what the gun.

That's pretty bad for the Super X though I think you should have run 15-20rds through it before testing for accuracy.
You're right. It was one of those days I was behind the 8 ball, the light was fading and I still wanted to get in some pistol practice.

You know, I thought I was just having an off day....

I picked up a box of those a couple weeks ago just to plink with. I have a 4" x 1/4" AR target hanging at 65 yards, and wasn't hitting it consistently with my M&P 15-22. Didn't give it much thought until my boy shot a Remmy Speedmaster at it and never missed it. He was shooting CCI's.

I put Super X in it, and his accuracy dropped to about 80%...

I prefer the Federal premium blue box and mini-mags.

I've got a 10/22 and I have several older boxes of the Super Speed Winchester HP, and they shoot to the same POI as CCI minimag HPs. The HP is bigger on the Win SS, but they seem to be a tad faster - of course I don't have a crony yet. I'll have to dig them out and shoot them against each other again. I don't recall getting many flyers with the WIN SSHP but I'll try again just for repeatability. I remember at the time the winchesters were about a dollar per 100 cheaper. Now they are the same price as CCI MMs
