Charlotte native

Born and bred here. Of course back then Southpark was a dairy farm and Duke Power owned the entire shoreline of Lake Norman. Finding a place to shoot was no problem. This is rapidly changing. I fell in love with the 1911 in the military and have been a shooting enthusiast ever since. I have been fortunate to live on a small piece of acreage for the past 25 years (outside the city limits) and had a good place to shoot. That is changing as increasing development is encroaching. I like practical/combat pistol and the last few years have developed an affinity for rimfires of all sorts ( cheaper and less likely to cause issues /complaints from neighbors). I have began looking for a convenient outdoor club/range which seems to be very limited around Charlotte... either the "Country Club" atmosphere/organization/cost or a couple of smaller clubs that are so exclusive or have so many potential members waiting in line they don't even bother to respond to inquiries. Am I wrong? Missing something?

Welcome to the site and thanks for your service. You are not alone in your search for a good outdoor range. Its one thing we seem to lack, well, that doesnt cost your to sell your first born to pay for.

We are similar situations as far as shooting on our own land. One thing to think about is getting some suppressors. Then you dont have to worry about noise and neighbors. Something to consider

My suggestion (as another 'Charlotte' native, actually Western StanCo) is to move to someplace that reminds you of what it used to be like. I like the foothills of NC myself. Not a problem shooting in your backyard in most small communities there.

If you like a similar climate but prone to more weather, then Middle Tennessee, and if you like hot weather, South Alabama. I'm under no assurance than the political climate of NC won't change and become MD, VA, et al.

But Efird's rifle range is a good outdoor range, and the fees are reasonable. But it's a haul depending on what part of Charlotte you live in and the commute on 24/27 is getting worse by the day. We're not a secret out here anymore :D

My father in laws family owned most of Margaret Wallace rd at one point. They had a dairy farm until his father passed away at 42 from a heart problems and they started selling it off. Welcome to the club.

Welcome from Gastonia! ;bd

A few months ago approval was granted for an outdoor range to be built in Cherryville. Not sure what the status is, they may be waiting for the weather to break before starting construction. Also, depending on where in Charlotte you are, it may be a hike for you to get there. I'm in Gastonia, right on the border of Belmont and Cherryville is a bit of a drive for me.
