My girls have been begging me to hit the range for some time now so today I took my 8yo for her first range trip. Drilled the Firearms safety rules into her head then hit the range. Set up my PWS Summit 22lr on a bag and showed her how it worked. Working on steel targets at 75yds, she jerked the first shot. Discussed how to properly squeeze the trigger and she nailed it on the very next shot. She learned quickly and about 10min later she was making it look easy! Best part was when we got into the car to leave afterwards the first thing she says is that she wants me to buy her own rifle. So proud of her. Here she is tagging steel at 75yds.

She's got working that bolt down pat. She didn't even flinch when that rifle went off, I did though. LOL Enjoy these times because she'll be grown before you know it.

We fortunate enough to have that part of the range to ourselves so the noise was no issue. A suppressed bolt action makes it even better as she was able to focus on everything that I was telling her without being distracted by the noise. It was also nice to have some reactive steel rather than paper targets. She was able to get that instant feedback which really helped keep her into it.

A friend recently bought his grandson a Savage MK II youth model .22LR and that thing is impressive. It's got the Accu Trigger and a wooden stock. The little guy is 9 years old and he caught on to shooting open sights quickly. He was hitting little steel discs at ease at about 30-40 yards. It's been a long time since I had seen a grin as big as the one he had that afternoon.
Oh, and it was a left had bolt action youth model.

The Savage Youth and Marlin XT22 Youth also look very promising!
