Filled out a pistol permit character reference for a REALLY nice kid who is a client of mine. His first name is Jermaine and he saw this forum on one of my desktops. asked me if I was"into guns" and I said "yeah, some." This kid has been a customer for several years now, and was at one time a track and field athlete. I really like him and have for a while. He asked lots of very intelligent questions and was very forthright with me about some of the questions he had about race, economic and cultural stereotypes, problems he would have as a black kid carrying. You could tell he was very comfortable with WHO HE IS (thus the frankness and honesty). I told him that I would STRONGLY recommend him carrying, and showed him one or two recent news stories of breakins and violent crimes in the Durham area.

He asked me if he could come with me some time to shoot at the range, and I said "ABSOLUTELY" So today, he comes in and lays down the character reference sheet and asks if I will fill it out for him. I had a smile on my face the rest of the afternoon.

Awesome. I am looking to mentor young guys in the shooting sports myself. The biggest issue is the stigma (usually by parents) that guns are evil and dangerous. I'm sure that comes from never being exposed to guns. At least this young fella seems to have his ducks in a row and is seeking out answers. This is better exposure to the culture than the gang-bangers version.

We don't have that "Character Reference Sheet" here in Wayne County...
