Yeah, used to be the same here for lots of years. But last year and this year we have been allowed to start in the morning on opening day.

 

always thought it was a dumb rule , I don't have a hunt to go to tomorrow but with them calling for 93 deg. I don't mind

First 2 weeks on local game land is permit only, and I was too slow. May go out 'round the house tomorrow (later today, since it's past midnight).

 

Lots of shooting going on around me but I haven't seen a single thing other than 3 ducks and a German Shepard.

 

I think we'll skip the dove fields this year. May just go paddle down the Neuse for a while and try to stay cool.

 

Trying to break in my new toy but not much flying yet. Only got off one shot.

 

I think I'll sit behind my Dad's shop and see what flies over. I have one box of shells from 1980something (price tag says $3.88). If I'm lucky, 25 shells should come up to about 1 bird. I hope I have enough bacon on hand to wrap it.

This was part of my morning. This is why I plant sunflowers on my pumpkin mound.

 

Zero birds seen this AM... Try again later today I reckon.

 

Skunked. Only took 6-8 shots. Not much flying.

 

Saw two sitting on a power line about 300 yards away and just before noon.

Other than those two, I saw nothing but a few buzzards and mockingbird.

I'll give it another try this evening, I need a break from the heat.

 

I got off 15 shots, with 3 birds down. My friend cleaned up with 7 birds down. Seems like no one around us went home empty handed (this was at Anderson Creek).


Last time I did this in Texas I got 10, and everyone around me limited out, so I'm thinking there were more birds in the air down by Dilley.

From what I remember, yes.

 

We ended up with 7 and couldn't find 5 or 6 because of soy beans. They stop flying early in Richlands too. It got hot early.

 

We looking at a migratory timing or heat issue this year for the poor hunting condition?

 

probably a little of both, always had better luck on overcast days

 

Used to love dove shooting but have given it up. Now I enjoy seeing them in our Oaks, on the drives, and nesting all around. Their cooing is so relaxing. Did you know that doves mate for life just like geese? Spending my time now preparing for deer season and dreaming of crisp air and frosty morns.

 

I fished over half the day on the new siler city reservoir. I bet we heard 1000 shots before lunch. sometimes they were shooting so much in one place it sounded like automatic weapons fire

Lots of crops have them scattered, too. Also, NCWRC told a good friend that crows will destroy dove nests (all three sticks...) and eat the young. He stopped hosting his annual hunt because of all the crows on his farm.
