Dropping my load on you

I thought I would just share this load with you.
I have been putting this one together for years and currently load it for, not only myself, but 7 different friends who use it faithfully.
I have personally shot sub half inch, 5 shot groups with it. I have shot deer out to 440 yards with complete pass through and i have killed deer from distances that wouldnt get you a first down.
If your shooting a 308, try it.
Start with federal brass, CCI BR primers, 41.5 gr IMR 4895 under a Hornady 165gr BTSP at 2.82"OAL.

Don't have a hunting load for the .308 but the load i use for long range is.....

Winchester brass
CCI BR2 primer
175gr SMK
45gr Varget

Seated to around 2.810" (I measure with a comparator only but I think this is close)

Disclaimer: This is at or above a max load in any load manual I have ever looked at. Work up to this load with extreme caution.

I thought max with Varget is when you couldnt get any more powder in the case.
I load some 125's for a buddy in his 308 and the charge hits the mouth. I have to move the case to the press carefully so none spills out. I dont even know why I measure each load. I should just fill the loading tray and pour the powder over the cases till they are full.;bd

I dislike compacting powder but some will completely fill the case. Shaking the loading tray helps it settle down or tapping it from different sides. Still I press the boolits in very gingerly while holding my breath--lol. I know they are not going to blow but it still gives me an uneasy feeling.

You're right, I can load pretty much any Varget load until the case is full and have no signs of pressure. But in load manuals 45gr is at or above a max load. I think the max load for Varget and a 175SMK on the Sierra software is like 43.5gr or something like that. I just put that up there so somebody new to reloading wouldn't look at this thread and just go load that load.

I don't really mind compressing loads, but its not something I try to do either. I was working up a 178 A-Max with Varget load but I am now on the hunt for faster powder. Seems you can only get so much powder behind that long bullet before it starts to push the bullet back up after seating. At 44.5gr (I believe), I can take it out of the press after seating, put it straight in the caliper, and watch it get longer. Talk about something that will make you go back and measure everything three times. Think I will try H4895 next. So far, me and A-Max's do not get along.
