Good glass and rings for a Mark II on a budget?

I'm thinking about putting a scope on my Savage Mark II, and to be honest I don't know diddly squat about scopes as I've always been an iron sights kinda feller. This will be for range plinking @ 100-200 yds max.

My budget: I'd like to stay around the $150ish range for a scope and rings, but that's not written in stone. I know I'm not gonna get something top of the line in that price range but I also know there's quite a variety of decent/good scopes in that price range.

My wants/needs: I'm looking at a magnification range from 2-7x32 or possibly 3-9x40. Something that I can see fairly well out to 200 yds.

My questions: What would be a good reticle for my intended purposes? BDC, Mil-dot, standard cross hairs etc.? I'll also need a decent-good set of rings for Weaver mount bases. Like I said, I'm not looking for something top notch for bench rest matches or anything.

Also, I was wanting to know some personal experience (if any) about the Vortex Crossfire II's. Not necessarily the exact scope I'm dead set on, but it is one I'm considering. http://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-crossfire-ii-2-7x32-rifle-scope.html.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Simmons 22 mag. Comes with rings for less than $50 from most online shops like Natchez Shooters Supply.

As others have stated the BSA Sweet .22 is a great low cost option for the little Savage.

The 10/22 sports a Simmons 22 Mag scope the MkII the BSA Sweet 22.
Both are good options and decent glass in this low price point which often is inherently hit or miss.

You're definitely going to want mil dots/bdc and/or finger adjustable turrets to shoot 22 out that far. An adjustable objective also is handy if you want to shoot at shorter ranges. Have a look at Mueller scopes, they have better glass than most bargain brands IMO for around the same price, and are known for repeatable adjustments (ie returning accurately to zero after adjusting for longer/shorter ranges). I just bought a Mueller APT for a 308 rifle but I hear they are very popular with rimfire shooters over on rimfirecentral.com. You're going to be hard pressed to see 22 holes at 200yds with 9X, a little more magnification and good glass will help.

Thanks for the input and advice so far guys, I appreciate it. I'm not looking to buy right this moment so I'm gonna take my time and decide what I think is best for me. I forgot about Mueller, I'll check them out as well. Like I said, I don't know much (if anything) about scopes and selecting the right one for me. I'd rather go on the personal reviews of my fellow CSC'ers than to rely on your average online reviews.

Thanks again.

BTW: Keep the suggestions coming lol.

I too have the Mueller, but its the 8-32 x44 which has a lot of magnification. But it has good glass, its very clear and like others mentioned its very repeatable in the adjustments. It has a side parallax adjustment and if you are unclear what parallax is all you have to do is google the term and read away. Most of the cheaper scopes are parallax are set for 50 years, anything beyond that range if your eye is not in just the right spot your probably going to miss your target.
The Mueller Target I have # is MU83244td. The reticules are very fine lines which might not the best for hunting if you need to bring the rifle up quickly then find the center. This is more of a target shooting scope.
Another problem is the price, I dont remember what I paid ? But Im sure its over the budget, but not stupid expensive.
Another problem is that this scope has to use 30mm scope rings, they are not cheap. Think I paid $70 for two of them from Midway.
Guess it all depends on what you want, your budget and what you expect it to do.
Funny how we have to pay more for an optic to shoot what we want to hit ,then what we paid for the rifle.
Buy good glass once, it can then be moved to another weapon.

A good idea for right about your budget would be a Nikon Rimfire 3X9-40 with some decent rings. I have one and I think the parallax is set to 50 yards. However if you are going to shoot 100-200 frequently you might not want a Rimfire scope but I will say my Rimfire scope is crystal clear at all distances but I personally like more magnification than 9x to shoot at 100 and 200.

I will likely be shooting more at 100 yds, but I'd like to know that what I have is capable of zeroing @ 200. I don't get to shoot @ 200 much but when I do I want something that I can easily dial in from a 100 zero.

I'm fairly sure the BDC on my nikon rimfire is a BDC 150 so 200 yards is not even on it. I rarely shoot the gun it is on over 100 yards.

However it really is not meant to be dialed in for calculating shots. I guess you could take the caps off and do that but it does not have exposed turrets.

Do you have anyone local that has some you can go look through? If not I would go to a gun store and look through some scopes and pick one YOU like instead of ordering one you have never looked through.

Good advice, my plans were to go to a local shop and look through the scope. If I can get a much better deal online on the scope then so be it. I could have gotten my Mark II for about $20-25 less online but I got it my hands right then and supported the locals guys at the same time. That was Fuquay Gun and Gold BTW lol, I'm in no way affiliated with them but they're a great place to deal with.

I bought my mark II TR from Gander...I won't even say what I paid for it. Lol I just decided over time if I find something I really like I won't let $50 keep me from getting it.

Gander is a good place to look at scopes though. I've actually never been to FG&G since it is so far away from most of the places closer to me but I've always heard good things.

If you weren't so far I would tell you to swing by my place and you can look through all my scopes and throw some lead down range off my back porch but I'm about 90 minutes away.

You will love the Mark II TR ! I just got into shooting rimfire here lately. I had ordered a FVSR from Lawmens back in Feb. I had waited long enough so I had a friend order me a TR about a month ago. I put a Muller APT 4.5x14 on it and LOVE IT !!!! So I then decided to build me a 10/22 ... I got a GM fluted bull barrel from a member on here and installed a Hogue stock along with a Muller APV 4.5x14 on it. I have shot both out to 200 yds with ease. I love shooting spent shot gun shells at 100 yds with the TR. I don't think you can beat the Mullers for the money. I do like the external adjustments on the APT alittle better than the APV. Both are equally clear though. Then 2 weeks after I picked up the Mark II TR low and behold Lawmens called me and my FVSR come in LOL. I don't know what I am going to do with it.

i know this thread is rather old ,but I can 2nd the Nikon 3x9x40 mm bdc, although mine isn't a rimfire mod. scope, it is a excellent scope, I have my Nikon mounted on my ar15 and zeroed in @ 100 yrds, my group of 3 shots just yesterday is within 1/4" of each other , I have always bought scopes from wally world like bushnell banner, centerpoint adventure class, simmons, etc. and I can say the extra money spent on optics are well worth it, you get what you pay for, I never payed over 100$ for scope with rings, but since ive got the Nikon now, I will not ever waste money on crappy optics again, if you plan on getting something cheap, just do yourself a favor, take the money outside and just burn it instead of wasting your time and money on something that will just disappoint you
