Over the last two years I've had 15-20 mounds pop up. I treat with ortho max granular but it never seems to kill the mounds. I thought I would get a jump on this early so any and all recommendations welcomed.

I'm not sure about long term control and about the ants here but in FL I used to use Bayer fire ant killer. Went on the mound dry and started killing right away. It was good stuff.

+1 don and shrek....when the EPA banned Chlordane (i heard it on the radio driving home), i stopped at the hardware store to buy everything (~2 gallons).
that next weekend, i bought all that Lowe's had which was +20 years ago. i have 1/2 gallon left. just like DDT, it works the best for the least money.
anyway.....
try these ideas:
1. Boric Acid powder. doesn't kill them, but will stop the advance. think of it as a powdered 'electric fence'. works on roaches, too. it's safe. diluted, it's a eye wash.
2. Ammonia. one 2 quart jug per hill. shovel up the hill and pour half of it in. mix and stir then pour the rest.
3. Chlorinated Brake Cleaner (not non-chlorinated). there used to be a Gun Scrubber like that, but it went away, too.

my lesson learned: when the Gubmint bans it, build your stockpile.

Supplies needed

Gas
Ice pick
Match

Pour gas on one side of the anthill and then set it on fire with the match.

Grasp the ice pick firmly. As the ants come running from their flaming home.....stab them with the ice pick.

this is good, also there's some stuff called Terro to put in the house it's natural non toxic to humans and pets, but man the ants line up at this stuff and lap it up like drug addicts then they take it back to the colony and kills it off, Terro might even work if put it out by the mounds never tried it but it will take care of the ones that get in the house.

Wow...I was gonna say shoot through the uncle....I need sleep....

Wait, What?

Tiger brand fire ant powder. Usually find at agri supply, big blue, or other farm stores. We get it at a local auto parts/hardware store.

The stuff works and works well....So do grits, FWIW..... I think they eat the dehydrated grains and they swell up and pop....

or "poop"....
LOL I caught that Brian!!

That's what I get for teaching my iPhone to spell pooping. Now it doesn't wanna spell good words, just the bad ones lol

Plain GRITS

Buy a bag and pour some on the mound. Gone by morning.

Heard this from a little black southern lady, thought BS......tried it and it worked!
Hahaha. I just googled this and came away with another alternative that I want to try.

Mix cornmeal with black powder. Pour around the mound. Come back the next day when it's all gone. The pour a new trail and light it.......kaboom.

Just invite Beesouth's neighbors over for a party, have them pee on the ant hills and viola, problem solved ;)

Seriously though, I've heard from a few old timers that the grits trick works. I haven't tried it myself but heard it from a few of folks that swear by it.
