Notice what good guy was doing wrong? Head buried in a damn cell phone. By the time he knew what was going on, he was looking down the barrel of a 12 gauge.

These are crimes of opportunity and targets are chosen. What do you want to bet that they may have passed on a guy walking along paying attention to what is going on around him? Situational awareness and mindset are our best assets.

That being said, this worked out fine in the end and I'm glad.

And it looks like he got himself a SHOTGUN.

Why does this look staged to me? Seems to obvious for some reason but I can't put my finger on it why.
I don't think it's staged. I'm to lazy to click the link and read the story so I don't know if its in there but apparently right after this the would be robber pulled up in a car and offered to trade the guy his cellphone he had dropped for his gun back. The guy said deal then proceeded to beat the shit out of the car with the shotgun. This makes me think it wasn't staged and the shotty was unloaded.

I have to agree. He just happens to be strolling down the sidewalk, perfectly in frame, in front of a security camera with some astonishingly clear audio. The victim is neither staggering drunk, nor walking deliberately, but instead casually strolling along ... with his nose buried in his phone at 5am in N'awlins. And the attacker almost seems to be anticipating the grab, holding the gun high enough that the victim can easily grab it without hitting the attacker's face.

I say staged. If I had to guess, I would say either a pair of burgeoning actors or just half-wit youngsters (same thing?) using the NOLA PD as unwitting publicity agents.

I dunno. If I had just disarmed a would-be robber like a white Jackie Chan, and he circled around in a car I don't think I would even try to talk to him. Because who knows what kind of backup and armament he has in the car, and I certainly wouldn't start beating on the car with the shotgun. I might, however, concoct that sort of a story if I were staging the whole thing, because it does sound unassailably badass.
