Do you have to get the CLEO signoff for a sound suppressor purchase or does that only apply to FA firearms? I live in Durham, one of the most liberal counties in the state, and judging from how long it took the Sheriff's office to process my CCW permit, I'm not thinking he'd be too happy about anyone wanting to own NFA toys.

You could also try a superior court judge and / or the District Attorney if I remember correctly.

It does not have to be the elected official. It can be the chief of police in the jurisdiction where you live, the sheriff or the prosecutor or solicitor of your county.

CLEO signoff for a suppressor

If your CLEO does not sign, you can use a trust or corporation to purchase anything but a machinegun. The trust does not require any annual fee or other annual paperwork like a corporation. The machinegun requires a permit from the CLEO. If the CLEO will not sign your form 4, he/she will not give you a machinegun permit.

You cannot use a trust in NC to get a machine gun.

The law does not allow that.

Most of the time the DA or Judge in the county will not sign if the Sheriff refuses to sign.
