Is there a law that states a movie theatre must have on-site security?
No, but as an aside I have long felt that there should be a law making it mandatory that any area in which citizens are prohibited from carrying firearms must be protected by an adequate armed security force. This would include places of employment and privately owned retail establishments, and at the expense of whatever the prohibitive authority was.

If Colorado is anything like Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota Wyoming and some of the other midwestern states I've been too, that is pretty common. Everyday crime is pretty low. Half the time people don't even lock their doors. When I lived in Montana and North Dakota, if I forgot to look the doors at the house It was no biggy. Hardly ever locked car doors either.

I don't think we need to go that far. Just make it legal to carry on public property (i.e, stop denying 2A right) and let private businesses decide for themselves. And people can choose between signed and unsigned theaters, restaurants, etc. And psychopaths can too.

I posted because the story said that there was security at other theaters elsewhere owned by the same company.

I for one believe that any CCW holder who was injured or the family of one of the deceased should sue the theater for denying them their right to defend themselves from that maniac.

^ This! By posting as a gun free zone they assumed all liability for personal injury to my way of thinking. This is only going to stop when it starts biting in the pocket book.

In NC you would have to sue the State, as it is prohibited to carry anywhere admission is paid. The theatres don't have an option.

My pops works for a security company. They guard theaters on big openings often but that is usually an unarmed post anyhow. Wouldn't make much difference.

I know you don't want to hear it but nobody was forced to be at the theater. This would negate any lawsuit they could file.

To win a lawsuit you'd have to be able to prove that having a firearm would have saved you. There is no way you can prove that.

If they wont let me protect myself and my family, then they need to protect me....if they can not protect me and mine then I should be allowed to. I think its only fair.
They have no obligation to protect you. You have the choice not to go to the facility. If you live in a state where you can not carry in church do you expect the church to have police on duty? If a property owner post no firearms signs is he obligated to have police or some sort if security?
