Remington 870 or Mossberg?

I have been wanting an 870 (The "riot gun" model...all black, 6+1 capacity but without the pistol grip option) for a while, and recently noticed a very similar-looking Mossberg model. Anyone have any experience with either? The Mossy is priced better, but I won't buy cheaper if it means sacrificing quality. Thanks...

Those two are like Coke/Pepsi really.

I prefer Mossberg, the safety is in a better location for me, and it just feels better overall.

When comparing the two you need to compare similar models. Comparing a 870 police model to a run of the mill, maverick is not a fair comparison.

I prefer the Remington because it's lots better. Just like .45 is better than 9mm, and 1911's are better than Glocks.

Actually, that Pepsi vs. Coke comment is about right on. Different folks like the very slight differences. I wouldn't expect either would ever let you down.

If you are left handed an Ithica 37 is a good option as well. Solid gun, and bottom ejecting.

I also chose the Mossberg for the safety location.
And the slide release location. That forward of the trigger guard release on the 870 is assinine design.

If you want a good tactical 870 shotgun, buy the H&R Pardner pump protect. It's a better modern 870 than anything coming out of Ilion NY nowadays. Cheaper to boot.

I'm an 870 guy thought and through, I've always had one since i was about 17 years old. If you go mossy, get a 590A1, they are overbuilt to the point of even having dual shell extractors. The main thing i notice between the 2 is the safety location and you have to surf out the shell if you want to do a slug changeover on a mossberg loosing 2 rounds as opposed to 1 in the remington. Whatever you get, learn to run it and it won't let you down.

All current production Mossberg 500s and Maverick 88s have dual shell extractors. The 590s main claim to fame is a thicker barrel, 8-round mag tube setup, and a heat shield.

Mossberg, the Remingtons are over priced and not built like they where 20 years ago, they also rust very easily. The only real advantage the remington has over the mossberg 500 is the ability to expand the mag capacity with screw on tubes. If you buy a hi cap mossberg to start with it is not a issue. The 590 is awesome if you want to go all out.

And if you get the A1 model a bayonet lug.

Did someone say Marine edition? Top is a 20" Mossberg 590 with Marine Coat. Bottom is an 18.5" Stainless steel Mossberg 500 with heat shield.

Had several 870s and obviously a few Mossbergs. Never had an issue with either but I like the Mossbergs better because of safety placement. Also I am more likely to short stroke with an 870 but that's probably just me. 870 seems to have more of an aftermarket.

Can't say anything about the Mossberg.

My gunsmith told me the 870 Express is cheap for a reason. Doesn't have the same quality of parts as the Wingmaster.
+1 on the Wingmaster vs Express. A older Wingmaster even more so.

Mine is a ISP (Indiana State Patrol), top folder, 2 3/4", trade in that I guess is from the early 80's. IDK, it was from a SGN ad in the late 80's, early 90's.

Nice, but getting older I'd like something with a real stock and lighter. The 870, 20ga, Deer special (20" bbl, rifle sights), is looking good, but scarce+not cheap. The PG on mine is getting less and less appealing as I get older and the folding (metal) stock is only good for bracing against your hip.
