I have a charter arms undercover 38 with crimson trace grips that i am looking to part with for that amount. This one only has maybe 100 rounds through it but my wife has put 600+ through our other charter arms without issue. just do not need two of them.

Not sure. I love my F-I-L's .357 686 model, but he won't sell it to me. :(

I may carry it as a secondary firearm during my rifle hunts in Michigan. Will need to stop a bear if needed. Will carry it in my car as backup. Will conceal if easy enough to. Basically, long enough to maintain accuracy but short enough to be manageable.

Police trade S&W M64s or M10s. Buds, Chestnut Ridge Supply, J&G Sales, and many other online resellers. Usually <$300. Avoid the semi-commonly seen DAO conversions, IMHO.

I have a cop-trade M64 that (I think) I bought from J&G that is one of the most accurate 50' target revolvers I own.

You should be able to find many Ruger and S&W used revolvers well under $400. Police trade-ins or just revolvers people trade at the LGS. Hit the local gun stores, pawn shops or check Gunbroker or Buds on line and see what you can find.

Ugh... I have been looking at wheelguns for recreational shooting and keep coming back to the S&W 686 SSR. People love the way they look or they don't...

I do. Good luck with your hunt!@

Well, even if he would- it would likely be for more than $400 ;-). I love my 6" 686.... Smith makes great wheel guns.

I was going to recommend a used M10- until I saw your "will need to stop a bear" comment! *gulp*

357 is plenty for anything 2-legged (IMO), but for bears?

I'd say 44 or 500 :)

You're looking for a S&W 629 Mountain Gun but that's well beyond your price range.

I've seen several used Blackhawks in 357 & 45LC pass through the BST forums around $400 in the past few months. Not sure if that would stop a bear but in the $400 range I can't think of anything better suited. Take the bear out of the equation and a 3"-4" Model 10 police trade in is ideal.

edit: almost forgot - look for a Dan Wesson model 14 or 15 (357 mag). those go for around $400.

If you need to tackle a bear a handgun is a piss poor substitute for the rifle that you're already holding in your hands!!! Don't get caught up in the BS bear stories you read on the rags......

Yeah shoot the bear with the 6.8 rifle :D
The wheel gun is a back up only unless you want a challenge.

Black bear are pretty docile, they usually go the other way when they see people. 357 mag loaded hot is the minimum back-up for blacks. 41 mag or hot 45lc or above is nice. I like 454 cas myself. For a primary handgun hunting round I would go 454 and up 460s&w and 500S&W make good primary hunting rounds, but they are not for everyone, lots of muzzle flip! Plus 2 plus dollars a shot, so less practice. Hard to beat 44 mag for Michigan, after all your not going to Alaska!

If you want a 357 mag back-up in your price range, look at the Taurus model 618, this is an 8 shot 357mag. I had one, it's a nice gun. They also make a few 44mags just a hair above your price range. If you don't mind a single action you can find a used ruger blackhawk 44mag around 400 something.
