I used to be able to roughly track it by the number of bullets I'd bought, before I had multiples in the same caliber.
Even then it all went South around the 5000 mark, quit caring.

I guess mine is mostly a guesstimate. I seem to just change springs during the winter just in case.

Back when I was burnin' ammo hard every week, it was easy to keep up with the count through my two Colt 91A1s which were my dedicated range beaters. The night before the trip, I'd load 72 7 round magazines...because 18 fit neatly into some old Master Caster bullet boxes...and split the ammunition equally between two pistols...three magazines per pistol...firing one while one cooled. 252 rounds per pistol per trip. Neat.

I Changed recoil springs when the pistols started to feel sluggish returning to battery when they were dirty. I never really worried about it. It averaged about 10,000-12,000 rounds on a spring. I changed mainsprings ever other recoil spring change.

Never really kept up with the count through my carry pistols because I don't shoot'em much. Rotate every so often...usually every 3-6 months...and fire the ammunition in the guns. Clean'em and put'em up for the next turn.

I have primarily shot 2 glock 19s over the past 6 months, my carry g19 and range g19. I've probably put ~1500rds through my range gun and ~1000 through the carry gun during that time. Each gun has over 2000 rds total through them. I have no idea of exact rd count, but I keep my guesstimate totals going so at least I have an idea of when to swap out recoil springs, etc.
