I have been trying for some time to find out if it was legal for a CWP holder to carry at Riverbanks zoo and after reading all of the different responses on this and other boards I e-mail the zoo. I asked who owned them and this is the reply I got...

"Thank you for your inquiry. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is a special purpose district , governed by the Riverbanks Park Commission, made up of 7 members who are appointed for six-year terms. Two members are appointed by the Richland County Council, two by the Lexington County Council, two by the City of Columbia, and one jointly by the three entities. Please let me know if I can assist with anything else.

I just thought that I would pass this information on because it looks like the zoo is off limits to concealed carry whether it is posted it or not.

… S.C. Code of Laws SECTION 23-31-215. Issuance of permits:

(M) A permit issued pursuant to this section does not authorize a permit holder to carry a concealable weapon into a:

(5) office of or the business meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special purpose district;

sounds like you still can because it says:

" office of or the business meeting of the governing body of a ...special purpose district;"

Unless you're suggesting the zoo is an office?

It does sound like the possibility that certain buildings there could be off limits, but I suspect those buildings wouldn't be open to the public anyhow.

I guess it all depends upon ones interpretation of rule number five ... I really hope I'm wrong.

After you go to Riverbanks Zoo in SC, why don't you let us all know whether or not you felt the need for carrying a handgun for protection arose?
What in the hell does that have to do with whether it's legal to carry or not? If a person is licensed to carry then that person should be able to carry anywhere that they legally can, location be damned.

Hey man, I'm just saying ... If you are looking for every reason you can find to NOT carry a firearm for you and yours' protection, then I am sure somebody at SLED, GBI, SBC, CSF, or the Riverbanks Zoo will step up and provide you that justification you are looking for to NOT carry the protection you obviously feel you need.

The Riverbanks Zoo carry questions was hashed in a thread about a month ago with an NC resident. If more and more people go stirring the pots around SC saying "Can I carry a gun in your park?" and "Can I carry a gun in your zoo?" questions, then the more parks/zoos and such will start posting the "No you can't carry guns here" signs.

I not looking for a reason not to carry, I'm trying to find out if it is legal to carry at Riverbanks zoo. I haven't asked anyone at the zoo about carrying because I don't want to give them a reason to rethink their policy in case it is legal with the proper signage ... I also don't want to break the law. How is asking about carrying at the zoo on a gun friendly board is "stirring the pot"?

This was already posted a couple of weeks ago!

I know that the question has been asked but the only answer anyone has is that it is not posted per the SC Code of laws, I was providing new information that suggests that it maybe illegal to carry whether they are posted or not.

Nobody asked the zoo if they could carry there. We were asking folks on here on the forum.

I'm pretty sure the powers that be at Riverbanks aren't scouring the internet gun forums looking for a reason to post their zoo.

I just received this in another e-mail inquiring about zoo ownership:

"We are publicly owned by a joint park district operated by a commission appointed by Richland and Lexington counties and the city of Columbia. ... "

If they are publicly owned and SC law prohibits CWP carry into publicly owned buildings are the bird house, aquarium and reptile Complex off limits?

I just hope you dont mess it up for us SC folks who already carry there and getting it posted aganst carrying, with all your questions regarding who owns the place and if you can carry in there or not, why dont you just read the SC laws and make a decision based on that. if you can not understand what the law specifically states then maybe you should not be carrying. because in the end what people on this forum says has no precedent in a court of law but only what the law states counts.

i thought you could not carry any where you had to pay admission to get into in NC anyway
Riverbanks is in SC not NC and they don't have that stupid law there. I have carried there several times. In fact even though I have a membership to NC Zoo I go to Riverbanks instead and spend my money there where I don't have to disarm or leave an expensive firearm in the car for hours.

You are incorrect, the governing body of the state passed a law that specifically states that you can conceal carry with in the park, regardless of how it is defined. it was passed by both houses of congress, vetoed by the governor and then passed by two thirds votes of congress, to over ride the veto. most recent version was posted on may 18th of this year. and here is the section that specifically deals with that law. as quoted from the bill, the effective date is june 3,2010.

"(7) carry on or about his person or discharge a gun, pistol, or firearm of any kind, including an air gun, bow and arrow, or dangerous weapon within or across the park, which does not apply to a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon; "
