I keep a gun vault that has a couple of pistols and 2 AR mags by the bed. The AR is unloaded but accessible in the room. I don't have any unsecured ammo or empty mags in the house so if a kid (or anyone else) wanted to load it up they'd have to bring their own mags and ammo.

This method give me quick access to both handguns and an AR if needed.

I can't imagine having to lock up ALL my ammo. I'd need like a vaulted closet or something. That would be ideal but out of the question for me right now.

That said, I really like how you have that setup. That's clever just having the mags in the safe.

You hit the nail on the head. That's basically how I have the ammo and mags etc locked up. Wouldn't all fit in a safe. It's purpose is to keep youngsters and other casual visitors out. Some added hardening but not to the level of a gun safe. It's only for mag and ammo storage along with some other non firearm related stuff.

I absolutely feel like a moron for not considering just locking a mag up. I never kept a long gun out because of the whole "don't want a loaded gun unsecured thing". But honestly, if I have time to open the little safe I have time to slap a mag in a rifle, if not, the loaded pistol is right there too.

I never feel like I need a long gun accessible in my house. I'm not going to "clear the house" if there's something suspicious... I'll hunker down with the family behind a locked door and my handgun will suffice. That's in a quick access safe. If I don't have time to open that I won't have time to bring the kid into the room anyways and have bigger problems. Spend the money keeping people out instead of worrying about getting to a rifle...
I guess you better learn how to actually shoot a pistol then... ;)

I just stick this on my guns and the kids can't go near them. Like magic.

On a serious note for the most part I keep my guns locked up. I do have an m1 carbine I keep at the ready though, with a magazine on the stock, not in the gun, but the bayonet is fixed.

Size of my house there is about 2 seconds from either entrance to my bedroom or the kids. I won't have time to grab, charge and take aim. However, ole Mr stabby is much safer than a loaded gun and quite quick to deploy if need be.

I have tested my 308, 30/06 loads at my local club, they will penetrate several layers of sheet rock and 2X4s. I'm not sure what you classify as SD loads. My loads are 168gr BTHP running from 2,600 to 2,800 fps. A 45 ACP 230gr FMJ will penetrate at lease 3 2X4 walls with 5/8" sheetrock. The same goes for 12 ga 00 buck shot. Brick and stone as well as cinder block will stop bullets.

Yes, intermediate is rounds like the .223/5.56, not full blown 30-06 and the like.

These threads are good because the bottom line is that each one of us, as individuals, needs to consider their own property when making decisions. There are some members here where a .50 Barrett is a perfectly acceptable solution as they don't have neighbors for miles, and for some who live in apartments over penetration is a key issue.

Remember though, rule #1 is that you and your people survive the encounter. Do not cripple yourself by choosing sub par solutions. I assure you, your opponent will not be.

Honestly with a two year old and a baby, height will solve your problem. Put some pegs on the wall and hang the AR 7ft off the ground with no way to climb up. Then you will buy yourself some time to figure out a better solution. I'm sure you could even fined some way to secure them to the pegs with a quick 3 number lock. It might be a bit *******, but if it's red and it works... it still works.
