Now with +1000 round through my XD sub I've had a few (four) FTE. Most of the rounds are store bought reloads (couple of different brands) for purposes of shooting at the indoor range.

For a while I've thought that's unacceptable and have the expectation it should never happen. Then I heard someone wisely overstate the obvious by saying that its man-made. Referring to the gun. And thus it's bound to not work correctly at some point. I think I agree. However, what about the ammo? ...it too, being man-made is going to fail.

So is it the guns fault or the ammo? I tend to think probably the ammo because the gun is much more a constant shot to shot. Other than ware, its the same.

Curious to know your experience and would like your perspective on what to expect....FTE and FTF per 1,000 rounds.

I have pistols that I have so little experience clearing a FTE or FTF that it takes longer than it should to clear one. In fact I'm pretty sure I had the first EVER on one while I was doing the shooting test to join a range last year (and I pulled it out of the safe and didnt clean or oil it before I went out here).

So no, its not normal for a broken in pistol.

bad ammo can cause anything.

4 per 1000 wouldnt concern me though, I would chalk that up to the ammo, lack of lube\too dirty or just limp wristing the shot.

4 within 1,000.....I would say that's not a problem....

I would tend to agree. Particularly if you're shooting reloads that you didn't reload yourself.

And anyway, your gun's ability to feed range ammo reliably is of secondary importance to its ability to feed your carry load reliably. So if you want to be sure, put $50 or $60 bucks into a couple of boxes of your carry load, and shoot those. Not that 40 rounds is a huge sample size, but if it's eating up range ammo with a failure rate of only 0.4% and it spits out two boxes of carry ammo to boot, I'd be plenty comfortable with that.

Next time it happens closely inspect the gun and see if you find anything out of the ordinary. My wife's Kahr had a FTF on some JHP's. We stopped shooting and starting trying to see what happened. Come to find out it was the slide stop that was a hair too long. It was hitting the bullet on a 124 gr JHP, where it was missing the 115 gr bullet. 4 in 1000 is not a huge issue, but see if you notice anything different when it happens. You may be able to pinpoint something.

Since you neither did the reloading yourself nor assembled the gun yourself there is no way to determine the cause of the failures you have had. Personally, I never judge the reliability of a gun based on unknown reloads.

There is a reason the military spends a lot of time drilling on weapons malfunctions. They all will do it sometime.
