Can't we all just get along?

I'm about done with the discussion threads on this forum. It seems that we can't go 3-4 posts in any particular thread without a certain few members jumping in and starting a pissing contest. I suppose that's just the anonymous nature of the internet; everybody's an expert and everybody's 10ft tall and bulletproof.

This forum has been a great place to converse and hang out for the time I've been here, but lately I'm fed up with all the petty squabbles. And it seems to come down to just a handful of members that start things down that road.

If someone isn't passionate about their beliefs, they should change them. If they are not firm in their opinions, they shouldn't state them in public. Be true to yourself and your own mind.

I don't mind the pissing contests, as long as the opinions are backed up with factual data or personal experience and it doesn't degenerate into a personal invective war. However, so often that's not the case. Self defense is a highly personal subject and a person tends to be relentless in their belief in the gun/caliber/ammo/holster they use. After all, they've chosen it to save their life. The bottom line in ANY discussion here should be - if it works for you, great!

I like reading different options and solutions on the subjects brought up in different threads.
I think we learn something from another point of view and experiences.

However, it's the pissing in the other persons cornflakes that stops me from continuing to read the thread.

So, what are you looking for?? Everyone to agree on all subjects??
Does the fact that someone's opinion differs from yours make it a pissing contest??
Are we all big boys or not??
If you don't agree with someone, call them out....... prove them wrong.... or not.
Keep in mind that some here may think that what they are saying just MAY help another board member out some day.... whether someone likes to hear it or not..... a differing opinion just MAY be a good thing to hear.
I have been "set straight" a few times in my life and it wasn't always fun but most always worthwhile.
I usually wear my big boy pants when I visit.......don't mind when someone disagrees with me.... I don't expect everyone to agree with me....just try to understand what I say and realize that there is no malicious intent.

I have no trouble with people disagreeing with me. And I have no problem learning from others. In fact that's a big part of why I'm here.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. This is taken from the thread I started over in the Handgun section re: mounting a light. From Demon613 (I'm not afraid of naming names)....

If you believe in the intent and purpose of flashlights, and own guns, there is no logical reason to not put a light on a gun. If you don't like magical hand beacons of unnatural sunlight then I can understand an Amish-like aversion to keep up with weapon and technology evolution.
First sentence....great! A statement of position that followed his points about why lights are good tools. On point and adds to the conversation.

Second sentence? Utter foolishness that adds nothing to the conversation. Other than to get a "dig" in.

And that post lead directly to a run of posts where Demon613 and NCXD40 went back and forth acting like 3 year olds.

you can always put said persons on the Ignore List
The ignore list works to a point. Yes, you can ignore the main instigators, but then in a given thread ou have to listen to the resulting chatter from the responses. If you then ignore the guys that "take the bait", pretty soon you'd be ignoring damn near everybody.

Honestly Seabee , I see your point ..... maybe I have a weird sense of humor but when I see something like:

" If you don't like magical hand beacons of unnatural sunlight then I can understand an Amish-like aversion to keep up with weapon and technology evolution."

I laugh my a$$ off..... I think a statement like that is pretty witty and funny... in other words, I take it with a grain of salt... and honestly can't get angry about it.
Demon called me a "professor of law" in another thread and I just laughed about it, figuring he was out of ammo and just stooped to the lowest form of communication.....
It didn't bother me in the least and I had a little laugh over it.

I try not to take any comments to seriously and notice most here don't....

I have noticed not so much in here but in forums like ar15.com that everybody is a expert or real world operator and everyone else is a idiot.
I take nothing too personally in here or elsewhere.
generally speaking in my 46 yrs of living I've found the loudest, brashest, most know it all type of people -- do not know as much as they think they do and they tend to talk/type themselves into a corner called silly.
I rarely make any firm stands on whatever subject being discussed, I'll type my 2 cents in if so inclined but I'm smart enough to know that I don't know everything, that firearms are a hobby for me and finally if the truth be told --- none of you MFer's really matter in my day to day life.

I'm not opposed to "good natured" ribbing or a back-handed compliment or 2. But it seems nobody is able to take one and move on. If you were to go look at the thread I called out you'd see that 1 little comment degenerates the conversation into a series of posts where dicks are whipped out and measured. It gets old very quickly.

** Long thread warning**

Can't we all just get along?

The short answer to that is, "No, you can't."

I come to this thread with more than just a little bit of experience in this area. I've been the "moderator" of a couple motorcycle forums for a good 6-7 years now. I put moderator in quotes because it's really just a title with no meaning. Those forums are 100% un-moderated and have been since day one. Why? Because myself and the other "moderators" there don't give a rat's azz what you say, how you say it or who you say it to. Yep, there are some good piss fights from time to time, but they work themselves out eventually. There used to be a lot more of them, but over time they got to be less and less.

An internet forum cannot be everything to everyone. Period. It's the same reason that The Black Panthers and the KKK have their own clubs. Now matter how much moderation is involved, these two groups will never, ever coexist. Yes, those are extreme examples, but you get my point.

So, we decided from the get go that the site would be un-moderated and let the chips fall where they may. Sure, there were lots of fights in the beginning (still a few from time to time), but eventually the guys/gals that either can't take it or don't like it go away. That's fine, I don't care. I don't have the time nor the desire to kiss anyone's azz, hold anyone's hand or admonish anyone for their behavior. We're all grown-ups and make our own decisions. If you're a minor and find your way to our site well, your parents should be keeping a better eye on where you go. Not my job man.

Anyhow, eventually the forum settles down to whatever it's going to become. The people that are left get along for the most part with a few occasional spats here and there. The new people that happen across the place usually make up their mind pretty quick whether or not they want to visit on a regular basis. If you want to stay, great. If not, don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

The guys/gals that are there today have become some of the best friends I've ever had and new members sign up all the time. We get together once or twice a year as a group to ride and consume HUGE amounts of alcohol. As individuals, I've lost track of how many people from the forum have either been to my house or my shop. My family vacations in Disney World on a regular basis with another family from Canada. Ain't the internets just grand?

Anyhow.... to the owner/moderators here, please don't take my views as a swipe at you, it's certainly not my intent. It's your site and you have every right to do whatever you want with it. You're the ones that have to do the hand holding, coddling and scolding. That's a full time job that I wouldn't want. And, as long as I choose to be a member here I will abide by your rules with no argument. If/when it gets to a point where I can't stand it anymore well, I'll just quit coming here.

To the members here that just can't seem to get along... well, this is the internet. It's loaded with whiners, crybabies, bullies, d*ckheads and everything in between. You can choose to ignore it or get used to it. I chose a long time ago to ignore it. There's too much good info out there to get offended over every other post. I wouldn't suggest you ignore it since it's so much more beneficial to you and everyone else. Some people just can't help but point it out when they think someone has behaved or is behaving incorrectly. And geezus, this place is loaded with internet lawyers! That's not a personal attack on anyone, it's up to you to decide who you are.

Anyway, that's pretty much my take. If you found some of what I said useful, great, I'm glad to help. If you didn't like what I said or how I said it, that's fine too, I really don't care.

Ignore 'em. Don't reply to someone who's obviously looking to show how smart they are or wants to p!ss in your cornflakes. After being ignored for a while they'll decide that it ain't fun no more and go somewhere else.
If I make a post I don't have to respond to anyone. I've stated my opinion and that's all I wanted to do.
If I'm right, why would I argue? The other persons attemp at drawing me into a p!ssin' contest shows who the idiot is. Screw em'.
For those who politely state an alternate opinion or a different point of view, I will gladly carry on a conversation.
Trust me - when I want to really p!ss my wife off I just refuse to argue with her when she wants to argue. She gets madder than hell, but she leaves me alone.... after awhile;).

Can't we all just get along?
Apparently not.

SeaBee I get your point, but I don't think this board is any different in that respect than any of the others I visit or can remember. And I can remember all the way back to the BBS systems of the 80's. There is always someone who has to get that first jab in or the last word. The moderator here does a good job of putting a stop to it.

When I see certain threads that I know are going to devolve I just try to ignore them. Reading or responding in these cases usually is a waste of good emotion. Believe me it is hard sometimes not to respond sometimes.

Isn't there a section where people can beat up on each other with out getting on every one's nerves?

If certain members seem to make a habit out of trashing others, just ignoring them is usually the best solution. The mods can put a stop to it.

All the best.

This^ That's the way it is, and the way it shall remain, for all of us.

I know that those who read my first posts here are long gone. One day I'll move on, too.
It's a transient entity, these interwebs.

The really annoying thing is, you start a thread on a specific topic and the pissing contests or some members wanting to be the big bad wolf turn it into something totally differrent. In result you end up having an unanswered thread or you end up having to post another one.

I appoligize for all those about to be offended. Pissing contests are a serious matter.

With that being said sometimes you just have to call the:

But seriously people this is on line people grow big brass and and others seem to have raisens in place of brass. Best thing is to step back make a post to get the thread on track and move on.

Yea it seems alot of people here are experts in firearms, and great advisors. I see alot of funny stuff up here, that i think alot of times really was'nt no harm meant. Then of course some people just get off on being a d!ckhead, because in all honesty if it we're face to face i would probably b!tch slap em', but on the "internet" everybody is a bada$$. I would imagine there are alot of "mall ninjas" here, but who cares if you know it all that's fine, and true alot of times you do need different opinions, i just try to treat others as i wanna be treated, but the world does'nt act like that, so if you smart off to me in a thread, and that makes you feel great (because you never had the balls to say something to someone ftf anyways) i will do my best to not get caught up in your little childish sh!t. While im at it another thing that bothers me up here (and theres a couple that has posted in this thread here that i'm speaking on) when you list something for sale and you are open to trades, why not put exactly what you are open to,if your really not (open) to hear all trades? If a person sends me a pm about a firearm, even if i don't like the weapon i'm not gonna come back with some smart smirk about it. I've had an incident or two that i sent a pm and they responded sh!tty, real short that they did'nt like "this" name brand, that's fine you don't have to like it, it was just an offer, and i might not have as many guns as you do, but if i sent an offer it want no piece of sh!t or lower grade firearm. Well i got my bigboy pants on so if you go outta ya way to act like a lil prick then that's cool..............lmao because my mama did teach me one thing, lmao, sticks and stones may break your bones, but your lil gay a$$ words will never hurt me!

There are about 20 people in the whole world whose opinions of me personally matter even a little. None of them are on any of these online forums. Sorry, it's mind over matter. I don't mind because you don't matter.

BTW, I sorta liked the "Amish" line. Cute, tongue-in-cheek sarcasm. To those who were offended by it - don't take yourselves too seriously, no one else does.

And my third little homily - If you'd take that ramrod outta your butt, you might be a nice guy.

And before I'm castigated - none of these comments is aimed at anyone specifically. If you think so, maybe the shoe fits.
